I think I disagree with this. While it's certainly possible to go out to fast & be unable to finish, I think a much bigger problem is to not go out fast enough. I prefer athletes with not enough left in the tank at the end instead of too much (obviously the goal is to get to the line with the needle exactly on empty). I want athletes daring to be great rather than hoping not to fail.

of course you're right, but the idea is to empty the tank at the last stroke. Much easier said than done, but then again they are the best in the world.

Thread where this was discussed....

Quote:Murder rates per 1,000,000 for 2004:

Washington D.C. - 358
Iraq - 473 (Includes all hostile deaths)

Overall Mortality Rate per 1,000,000 for 2006:

New Orleans - 910
Iraq - 1,168

But here is the interesting part. How many stories have we heard about that war zone known as Washington D.C.? Zero. Why? No one cares (i.e. no T.V. ratings). However, every single person at "Moveon" can probably tell you the name and rank of every soldier killed in Iraq. If there was as much concern for what is going on inside the U.S. as there is for what is going on in Iraq, we would probably be able to solve all of the problems here through the use of the same outrage that people have for the Iraqi war.

Quote:For 2006 per 1,000,000....

Baltimore - 433
Philly - 277
Detroit - 473

So I guess you might as well go to Iraq. It is just as safe as Detroit....

Feel free to add your rebuttal....

P.S. This was data from 2004, when Iraq was actually dangerous. It is probably about as dangerous as Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo now...

They might as well stop keeping track, or at least announcing them. I know records are made to be broken but it's getting ridiculous. At least everyone who sets a record here can at least say they did it in the Olympics, unlike Hayley McGregory who briefly held the 100m backstroke record during the Olympic Trials but didn't make the team, finishing third in both of her finals for the second trial in a row.

I love how this thread has devolved into two separate discussions - one about swimming & one apparently about wars & slavery. It's a little jarring to click on it expecting to see something about swimming & get the murder rates for DC, New Orleans, & Iraq instead.

Yeah, and while we're at it, we need to stop using red ink on tests and stop giving out trophies to the winners of Middle School football games. You know, since there are no losers.

Oh, wait, you libs are already pushing that.

You guys seem to love Darwin since most of you are evolutionists. Too bad you don't prescribe to one of his theories. I do wonder, how would Libs survive if we had a massive world-wide catastrophe that turned us back into hunters for our sustenance?

I think we found the guy in the bar who's a little too drunk to keep up with the conversation.

When I said we'd have to agree to disagree, I was actually replying to swoosh.

However...

Quote:Overall Mortality Rate per 1,000,000 for 2006:

Iraq - 1,168

For 2006 per 1,000,000....

Detroit - 473

You do realize 1,168 > 473 (by more than double) right?

well either way, i still think we have a pretty damn good track record in war, but i don't count the civil war as a win or loss.

I'm sorry, I thought we were having an "intelligent" conversation. I thought that you would realize that overall mortality rate =/= murder rate. I guess I have to take it slower....

Does that clear it up for you?

Statistics can be fun. To compare city to city, Basra had a violent death rate of 923 per 1,000,000.

I think the 100m finals tonight underscored what a remarkable performance Lezak put in during the relay. Factoring in the reaction time, it seems like Bernard swam roughly the same time in winning while Lezak's time was much slower than his relay split. Some people just gain extra motivation from the team aspects of a relay competition & it seems like Lezak might be their new poster child.

Haven't read the whole thread, but Swoosh or any other French hater, you ever met a French person? THEY'RE NOT BAD PEOPLE. It's like us back home wondering why most of the entire world hates us, but when they meet us, they're like "hey, you're not so bad afterall." Unless you're the ugly American traveling abroad. I doubt even RebelKev would do that.

Surly you're not serious Blah? This is one of the questions I wanted to ask my brother, who served two tours and just got back a few months ago. I don't know how to go about engaging him in details. Basically all I can muster is "what are the night's like?" Speaking about the temperature. I'll let him tell me about the Sh!t on his own accord. But I can only imagine that Detroit is still far far safer than an IED laced Iraqi street. And a far cry from Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo.

And I think that comparing a certified war zone is different than a city in the states by about a few hundred RPG's. People are still dying in Iraq.

I've been to France a few times. I was stationed right next door. When I talk smack about the French, maybe what I "mean" to say is the Parisians. I've met some cool ones in Paris, but most of the ones you meet on the street are like the ******** you meet in downtown NYC. Get out in the French countryside and they're very nice. Besides, seems they're starting to grow their balls back.
