RE: Worst Fans Poll
Your question needs to be clarified. I voted for WVU based on the rudeness, disrespect and violence attributed to their football fans.

However, I would not have voted for them had I known which conference school had the poorest fan support. That's who would have gotten my vote.

RE: Worst Fans Poll
Who cares? West Virginia has always been America's whipping boy. Any West Virginian expects it by now, and most know how to deal with it.

Of course, there are always those few...

RE: Worst Fans Poll
It is interesting that in general the "worst fans" from conferences tend to be from the most successful teams. There is no doubt that WVU has more then its share of drunken idiots and others who take the game way too seriously.

The popularity of the game, the extended tailgating and an overreaching interest in seeing the team succeed leads to many of the problems.

I really respect the West Virginia program and many of their fans that post on message boards that I frequent. I also appreciate the support West Virginia has shown ECU by scheduling home/home. I've never been to a game in Morgantown, but I know several that have attended. Many came back feeling like they were fortunate that they were not assaulted. One guy I know actually had his jaw broken when he got sucker punched as he was walking through a crowd. I realize that the majority of West Virginia fans are not thugs. I also realize that every school, including ECU, have drunks that get out of hand during games. I just think that West Virginia has a little more than average.05-mafia

RE: Worst Fans Poll
Yeah, yeah...West Virginia fans bad blah blah blah...I'd rather have that then no fans which is what a few schools in the BE have...At least we don't have to give two for one season tickets away or jump and down when we actually get 30,000 to a football game...

I've been spit on in Blacksburg and had pop thrown on me/my car vandilized in Pittsburgh. I'm not that sympathetic. If you afraid of the rumors, and most of the stories are just stories, then stay home. We can actually fill up our staduim without visiting fans.

RE: Worst Fans Poll
I've never had any trouble anywhere. I've always found fans passionate. But I haven't encountered any morons. Talking to opposition fans before a game, comparing each teams strengths and weaknesses, can really make the anticipation for the game increase to a delicious sweetness. And this made the final victory all the sweeter, if it came.

If it didn't, sh!t happens. For every winner, there is a loser. But you can have a contest, and appreciate the effort on both sides, without getting ignorant.

And I always left folks saying, "I'll buy you a drink to commiserate your misery after we kick your butt. If y'all win, you're buying." 04-cheers

RE: Worst Fans Poll
I've been going to Mountaineer games for 25 years and have never seen an incident against a visiting fan that I would consider crossing the line. I have seen mindless heckling and drunken idiots interested in starting something verbally. I have seen quite of these morons thrown out of games by Mountaineer fans embarassed by that behavior.

I'm not denying the ugly incidents because obviously I'm not a visiting fan. I know that when I go on the road I can get the same insults. I suppose it MAY be more of an issue at WVU but I think the issue is that quite a few fans of many schools treat visiting fans in a very unsportsmanlike manor. I would like to see a return to the days when SPORTSmanship was a big part of sports.

To any visiting fans be assured that the vast majority of WVU fans do not find this behavior acceptable and many will call out WVU "fans" who are crossing the line.

RE: Worst Fans Poll
Some people in Morgantown can take tailgating to 'heard-of' levels, I guess.

I'm just gonna take a wild guess and say Seton Hall, Providence, St. John's, DePaul, Rutgers or USF have the worst fans (judged by support of your teams). I could be very wrong, and probably am.

RE: Worst Fans Poll
"Worst" fans probably comes with winning. When you have a large enthusiastic fan base that expects to win pure percentages tell you that there will be more idiots. Schools with a history of losing don't end up on these lists.

You certainly saw some of these worst fans come out after the Pitt football loss. Obviously it was a bit more then a typical loss and some fans went over the edge. Disappointments like that (and losing RR) will do that.
