RE: Big East To Vote On Lacrosse
doing some searching on where these teams are in these other conferences, i see that bellermine is in louisville. i know that louisville doesn't have a men's lax team. do you think that the creation of a bigeast lax leauge as well as a crosstown lax team would generate interest in a men's lax team for louisville?

Does Louisville support Lax at the HS level? In order for it to takeoff it needs to start in the schools...in Syracuse (CNY) the kids play in middle school and high school.
Louisville men would have to recruit areas missed by the big programs...I don't think they would be too successful until you get high level homegrown talent from the Ohio Valley. UL women might have an easier go though.

RE: Big East To Vote On Lacrosse
Three things:
Apparently, the holdup centers on whether Villanova and Providence can come up with the money for enough scholarships and assistant coaches to meet NCAA Division I requirements.
Previously, Syracuse was rumored to be one of the teams holding out because, as an independent, the Orange didn't want to give up an attractive schedule that included such teams as Johns Hopkins, Towson and Loyola.
But Syracuse appears to be on board now.
"When we first had preliminary talks, I talked with our athletic director about the strength of schedule, RPI rating and having some flexibility in who we scheduled," Orange coach John Desko said. "We don't want to give up the Blue Jays, Tigers or Loyola....
...If the eight-member ECAC loses three teams, it would have to pick up one (six is the minimum) or lose its automatic qualifier, according to Loyola coach Charley Toomey. The Greyhounds are also a member of the ECAC.
1.) I wonder if Syracuse will push for Loyola to be part of this new league regardless of what Villanova or Providence do, or will they push only if both do not make the proper commitment?
Notre Dame is one of the driving forces behind the creation of Big East lacrosse, and it's easy to understand why. The Fighting Irish are members of the Great Western Conference, which includes Ohio State, Denver, Air Force, Bellarmine and Quinnipiac.
Who? Notre Dame has had problems scheduling the big-name schools from the South and East. To get to South Bend, Ind., or for the Fighting Irish to travel east requires a team flight and can eat up a large portion of a budget. Remember, this is college lacrosse, not major college football.
"I guess you could say that," Corrigan said when asked whether Notre Dame was out front in trying to form the Big East. "But this is not just good for Notre Dame, but lacrosse, as well.
2)
Once again the Irish are trying to get the most benefit out of what this league has to offer - basketball, soccer, and now lacrosse - without giving back in the only thing they have to offer - football.
3) Lastly, as I have said before, if the ADs (and by extension the BE football presidents) at Syracuse and Rutgers are on board with a men's lacrosse league then the odds are not very good they are thinking about splitting.
Cheers,
Neil

To my knowledge there is not high school Lax anywhere in the great almighty Commonwealth of Kentucky. However we didn't have girls fast pitch softball until recently either.

Johns Hopkins is a perennial national power in lacrosse. Since they are located in Baltimore, it is easy to see how the article was written there.

Lax has all kind of options, ACC schools, PennSt & OhioSt. If BE split is mutual on both sides. BE Lax could surive.

Not that you were implying this, but lacrosse in Maryland is more than just Hopkins. Granted Hopkins is one of the most success programs in history, but it is played at a high level across all college divisions (and of course high school and middle school).
And not that TexanMark was implyig otherwise, but lacrosse is supported throughout New York State on all levels (college, high school, middle school) as well.
Also, since Loyola (MD) has been a BE member for women's lacrosse, are nationally competitive for men's, and have been playing 3 BE teams as ECAC-mates, it's not far fetched that they might receive support for inclusion from SU, SJU, RU, and GU.

Of course you realize, if the football schools split away in 2010 this all comes to naught.

RE: Big East To Vote On Lacrosse
I dont think that the idea of the BE forming a lacrosse league is any indication as to whether a split is coming or not. Its very common for schools to play non revenue sports in a different conference than the one that their revenue sports play in. For instance, Neil pointed out that ND and OSU play lacrosse in the Great Western Conference, while ND plays most of their other sports except fb in the BE, and OSU plays most of their other sports in the Big 10. That is by no means an indication that either of those teams are looking to join the Great Western Conference full time, for example.
Since some of the fb schools of the BE dont even play lacrosse at this time, the BE fb schools could actually split from the bb schools and the future lacrosse league could still be intact with schools like Loyola who isnt even part of the BE in any sport that I know of.
I think the idea of a lacrosse league for Syracuse to be apart of is an excellent idea.

-- Agreed Omni...I took the presidents taking the time to overhaul, and ignore Tranghese's advice, in regards to expanding the BE tournament in the same way.
That kinda stuff doesn't happen if we have on foot out the door
