Once again Idaho is claiming attendance of 15 K plus for the LT game (15,012) when in fact two full sections on each side were virtually empty and the hanger only seats 16 K. Obviously the Vandals have their own unique system of counting.

NMSU annouced in the 7k range. That crowd was maybe 3k if you counted the bad and the football players.

The Reno Gazette did a big article on attendance a couple of weeks ago. It said that only two teams annouce actual attendance, USU and Nevada.

You can add SJSU to list of schools the report actual attendance. SJSU has always counted via the turnstyle, and not via "tickets distributed".

If there were any numbers padding going on, SJSU certainly would have announced better numbers last year.

SJSU announced 17k for the Nevada game. No way in hell 17k were at the Nevada game. And I am only going off what the RGJ reported.

I've been attending games at Spartan Stadium since 1975. Believe me, the 17K figure is accurate.

Tennessee announced 106K+ for their near loss to Memphis. The game announcers estimated 'maybe' 80K actually attended.

Everybody and I mean EVERYBODY announces tickets sold, not actual attendance. This a tired, old and stale debate.

SJSDude, I have the game taped. No way in hell I will agree that was 17k fans. The upper deck is about 7/10 empty, the endzones pretty sparce. The only crowded section in the entire stadium is the students. While I will agree it's a huge jump in the other games I seen at your stadium, that is not 17k.

email from UI AD spear indicates that UI is counting "tickets sold" and not actual attendance. I give UI high marks for being about to sell so many tickets week after week to thousands of people who, apparently, have no intention of attending.

NMSU counts attendance by "ticket stacking". All stubs are placed in piles. X" high equates to X number of tickets. So measuring the stack gives a count. Not sure if they include season ticket holders who did not attend since technically, they bought a ticket.

I was at the game and 7k is probably about right.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Nevada truly is reporting actual attendance. If you attended a game, you'd believe it. The SID has confirmed this, and swears the count is as accurate as they can make it. As to WHY they're reporting actual attendance, I couldn't tell you.

Re: NMS attendance on Sat. The crowd on the televised (sunny) side of the field looked like it numbered in the hundreds. However, from camera shots of the backs of heads, it looked like there may have been many more on the shady side. Is that the case? Regardless, the crowd was far, far, far, far smaller than the LaTech/Nevada game (8400 reported).

Why don't many places just add turnstiles? That seems like a cheap way to get a very accurate count of attendance.

Data with respect to athletic events are necessary for internal analysis as well as for comparative purposes. I suggest the following:

1. Actual attendance; 2. Paid Attendance 3. Ticket revenue

I reword that to:

1. Actual attendance 2. Tickets distributed 3. Total revenue

"Paid" attendance gets fuzzy when you consider student, comp, and discounted tickets. Revenue is really the most important number.

And how much driving time was that? You are thinking in east coast terms. In the West, we are spread out a lot more.
