We don't know that this defense would be any different with Petrino there. Both Dumerville and Okoye were studs on that defense and are both in the NFL now. Same DC from the previous staff, but only six starters returned from that defense and much of it was on the front seven, not the secondary, unlike the offense which was virtually unchanged. The need to protect that secondary leads to less blitzes.
I think the defense would be different. Despite the fact that Cassity was co-defensive coordinator last year and has the currently dubious title on his own this season, much has been changed. Petrino looks like he knew what he was doing when he decided to only take 50% of the defensive coordinator position to Atlanta. The D-lineman are being taught to stand their position while holding the O-lineman in place this year, rather than a more aggresive teaching style for the D-lineman over the last few seasons. This is evident in that we were near the top in the nation in sacks the last few seasons, but have only 3 on the season so far in 2007.

That’s why I have been incredibly happy with what coach Kelly has done so far. I was very worried about the adjustment period for our team. The offense has had some issues, but the offense was never very good to begin with last year. The offense has been efficient in the redzone, which is very important.
The defense has been better than last year so far…and that is saying a ton.
I remember when Dantonio came he was awful his first 5 or 6 weeks until the teams finally bought into his style and what he was doing(also Dantonio played more to the players strengths as well). After that UC played great football…except the most embarrassing game I ever went to was against Louisville that year. The point is the players are adjusting to a new coach, and the coaches are adjusting to knew players… It will take some time. I would not give up yet Louisville
