WVU hits 6th straight record enrollment

StoryMORGANTOWN -- West Virginia University will set a fall enrollment record for the sixth straight year.
Preliminary figures show 27,500 students are enrolled at the Morgantown campus for the semester that starts Monday, an increase of about 400 students from fall 2006, WVU officials said Wednesday.

WVU enrollment has grown in 10 of the past 12 years. The growth is in line with WVU's strategic plan to reach an enrollment of 28,500 by 2010, said Brenda Thompson, an assistant vice president of enrollment management.

WVU manages the number of students admitted so that the freshman class does not overtake housing, faculty and classroom resources, Thompson said.

Also on the increase is the quality of new students.

The 29 new National Merit scholarship winners enrolled is a school record, and the freshman class of 4,700 has one of the highest test scores and grade-point averages in school history, WVU officials said.

Good news. I was just in Morgantown this weekend and really felt nostalgic about being at WVU, seeing all the students returning to town. Morgantown is growing by leaps and bounds, and i'm sure the success and visibility of the football program has something to do with it.

Blacksburg and VPI went thru a similar period when the Hokies started becoming successful on a national level.

I think the student population was about 10,000 fewer when I went to school. Morgantown has grown considerably.
