Pitt was a private university from 1787-1967. Had we been a pubic university in the 50's we'd have probably gotten into the Big 10 instead of Michigan State.

Syracuse's endowment would have been much more except for a thing called the depression...seems like they owned alot of stock in Franklin Automobile Company in 1929 ooops!

Fully aware and agree with your premise. Which would be all the more interesting because then PSU might never have been invited and thus the two institutions could be in opposite positions from today.

I was merely implying that Pitt has access to State funds in the manner of other State sponsored institutions as opposed to private U's that do not, as the previous poster was discussing.

Not all States spend freely on higher education, or on construction, and many States require the schools to match funds.

I don't work for UC so I'm hardly an expert, but I believe an endowment helps you to pay for things like a Varsity Village or the major building and rehab effort on UC's Main or "West" Campus during the 90's and early this decade by borrowing against the endowment.

So a public school endowment IS a big deal.

Agreed. And being a member of a BCS conference, the Big East, will help South Florida raise money.
And with USF having the largest student enrollment in The BEast their endowment should grow dramatically over time.

UAB's at 304 million

And to the person asking about the UA System, that's because UAB and UAH are the only schools in the UA System that seem to give a darn about education. Alabama has a large endowment, but you're definitely right in that their academic performance as a school has been less than impressive. People don't consider them a party school for nothing.
