blah Wrote:I have recently been listening to a group called Saxon Shore. It is instrumental (I usually am not a fan of instrumental), but for some reason I just really like it. My favorite tracks are probably The Revolution will be Streaming and This Shameless Moment

I have also been listening to a group called Band of Horses. The vocals are a little different, but I think that is what makes it noticeable. Favorite track by far is The First Song, but also like The Great Salt Lake

Would be interest to hear a review on either Rock Kills Kid or Halifax if any of you have heard their new stuff.

Saxon Shore is sweet. My favorite track is "Twilight is our Advocate Tonight."

What? What? What? Come on. You're mister obscure music art music guy. Frankly, I'm suprised you don't like it.

For what I've been listening to lately: Guided by Voices and trying to gather some old Material Issue. I'm making up for lost time. Not sure how I missed either the first time around.

I also posted this under something a while back, but I've been enjoying this 12 covers in 12 months project. You can here a few originals here: http://www.myspace.com/dfactor

I've also thought NIU would enjoy Sufjan. He's an indie kid just like me. I do tend to opt for more mellow bands though. Does Aimee Mann have anything to do with Guided by Voices? Or did she sing "Voices Carry"? I don't recall, but I love her. Oh, and I'm listening to Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Two Gallants right now. Good Stuff.

Going to a Jens Lekman show tomorrow (hopefully) and then Xavier Rudd on Thursday at the same venue. Been listening to two New Pornographer members, Neko Case and Destroyer's albums right now. Very good.

oh, trust me. i dig mellow. and dont get me wrong, some of sufjans stuff i like. but its not something i keep coming back to. go figure. and the singer for belle and sebastian i just cant stand.

i agree with you about aimee mann though. shes got some damn catchy songs. the "magnolia" sountrack is great, esp driving sideways. do you like jon brion? if i ever go to LA, im gonna have to make it a point to catch one of his weekly shows.

some other stuff ive been listening to lately:
a tribe called quest: low end theory
built to spill: perfect from now on
califone: quicksand/rattlesnakes
easy star all stars: dub side of the moon (reggae version of dark side of the moon ;-). if you like the original, def check this out)
broken social scene: s/t
goldfrapp: supernature
johnny cash: american V: a hundred highways
the others: past futuristic (more jazzy intelligent hip hop)

also, got a ticket for the last day of lollapalooza! wilco, chili peppers, broken social scene, the shins, and whoever else i happen to stumble across (would have liked to go the 2nd day too to see the flaming lips, theivery corporation, and blackalicious, but cant win them all)

i mite be able to go to the pitchfork festival too. my friend has an extra ticket, but i have to see if i can get off work. pretty decent lineup

Almost missed that last part. I saw that on Pitchfork's website. I'd love to go to that. Mountain Goats, Jens Lekman (forget who else off the top my head). But I'm seeing a Jens Lekman show tomorrow, what a unique cat. I don't know about Built to Spill. I dig some of their stuff, but it's hit or miss for me. I'm really digging Regina Spektor's new album, though it's more poppy (by that I don't really mean commercial, but she's deviating from Soviet Kitsch) and there's less piano, but her talent is undeniable. The first 6 tracks are fantastic, and my favorite tune is "That Time." I love when she sings, "Remember that time when all I ate where... boxes of tannngerrines. So cheap and Juicy." I can't describe how she sings, it's different. The way she sings juicy, is soo funny and cool.

I don't know if this has been mentioned already, and if it has, I apologize. But if anybody has not heard Stadium Arcadium, go and get it. One of the best albums this century IMO.

Overall though, most of the music that has come out in the last 15 years is just not that great. I prefer Dylan, Hendrix, Boston, Grateful Dead, and some Velvet Underground.

I do like Tom Petty and Journey though, they put out some good stuff in the 90s.

now that i know a lot about present rap, i've been trying to listen to older hip-hop. i've had the Stillmatic album on repeat for a few days now. I also listened to Illmatic, which i love, but i like stillmatic better. I also love Illadelph Halflife and Things Fall Apart. Both great albums from the Roots, of course, Game Theory is very good too.

good albums right there. if youre looking for more jazzy hip hop.....

have you checked out pete rock/cl smooth? criminally underated duo from the golden age of hip hop (early-mid 90s, back before everything went "gangsta" and there was still mainstream intelligent stuff out there) HIGHLY rec:
mecca and the soul brother (my all time fav hip hop album)
the main ingredient

also check out:
gang starr- daily operation
gang starr- step in the arena
public enemy- it takes a nation of millions to hold us back
tribe called quest- the low end theory
tribe called quest- midnight marauders
souls of mischief- '93 til infinity

and if youre looking for something a little different (aka "instrumental hip hop"/turntablism), my favorite album of all time (hip hop or otherwise) is:
dj shadow- endtroducing...
seriously, that album changed my life. its that good.

i've actually started looking at gangstarr. i don't really like public enemy or ATCQ, or de la soul's early stuff. but i'll definitely check out dj shadow's album and pete rock (who did production for the new boot camp clik album, which is really good)..

As for Gangstarr, Step in the Arena and Moment of Truth are good albums, so is Guru's Jazzmattaz albums. If you want a solid Gangstarr collection, pick up their 2 disc set I think it's called Decade of Game. It features the late Big L. Possibly the best Gangstarr song is "Work." Love that tune. You should also check out some Organzied Konfusion, featuring Pharoah Monch. And Nas is nice. Illmatic is a great album, while Stillmatic, while a triumph in it's own right, the return of the prophet, can't hold a candle to the original.

i think the lyrics on stillmatic and illmatic are about even, illmatic's were probably better. But the production on stillmatic is much better than illmatic.

i dunno, its not for everyone. i guess i should say changed my entire outlook on music. and i think instrumental is the wrong title. first of all, its a turntablism album. everything is taken from vinyl samples and made into something completely new. and you also have to understand that when this came out in '96, nothing had ever been done like it before. it was completely groundnbreaking and set the benchmark that has influenced literally hundreds of artists. you can find that records influences everywhere, which is why to maybe a newcomer it seems dull. but its truly as fresh as the day it came out. and dont just brush it off b/c its instrumental. ive found the albums i enjoy the most i have to let sink in, while the ones that i like instantly usually fade pretty quickly. all i can say is, endtroducing is almost a spiritual album for me, and its hard to put into words exactly why. but heres a couple good articles/reviews that reflect how i feel about it.

http://www.tinymixtapes.com/articles/05....t_song.htm
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/re...xe_Edition

also, if you get the chance, pick up the documentary "scratch". it chronicles the origins of hip hop/rap, and features dj shadow, gangstarr, mixmastermike (from the beastie boys), and a ton of others. itll give you a great picture of how things got to where they are today. really a great movie.

I got the new T.I cd King. Its pretty good IMO. I might even look into getting his back catalog.

Ohhh the new OutKast comes out next week...soundtrack to their new film Idlewild. I hope its good....

New Audiosalve, Revelations, has a release date of 9/5 04-rock 04-rock

*************

OMG... can't forget BDP & KRS ONE for GREAT old school hip hop.

And don't forget Knowledge Rules Supreme Over Nearly Everyone. If you want a good sample get his Greatest hits cd first but all the cds are good.

I know a lot of my friends back in the day were really into Kool G Rap and DJ Polo... I nver bought any of their tapes but their videos had great tunes. They would be the equivalent of PE social commentary in a pre-NWA gangsta rap type style.
