Jumpin Joe bit the dust; he is no more! We had Jumpin Joe when I was an Undergrad, then we went to Runnin' Joe, and we now have the name Indians and that is about it. I do not believe that the Brave is allowed to dance and taunt the opposing teams any longer. Chief Big Track sits on his horse in the end zone. It is all about using the Indian Family as a show of respect and honor; they are not fun anymore! Could it get anymore boring?

Well, Jumpin Joe was replaced with Running Joe who was supposed to be a bit more firece looking version of Jumping Joe. Running Joe was fazed out during the politically correct fad.

Now we basically have a logo like below. We do have an Indian family that stands around games like they've been smoking too much peace pipe. :snore:

We also have a "spirit character" similar to this  . His name is Red. At first everyone, including me, hated Red. He resembles the cartoon character Doug, but is the color red. The kid in the costume does a great job & the kids love him. The problem is we're the Indians. Anyway, there's a quick rundown.

I was digging through some stuff the other day & found a patch from 1979 that says East Arkansas Council Jumpin' Joe jamboree. It has Jumpin' Joe on it.

I know this is about Jumpin' Joe but since you brought up your current "doug" character let me add that our "spirit" character, named Cayenne, looks horrible but like "doug" the kids love Cayenne 03-confused The only thing worse than the picture below is to see Cayenne in person :frown:

At least he fits your mascot theme. :bang:
A wolf, bear, eagle, buffalo, deer....all of these fit our theme. All of these animals were revered by the Native Americans. It also would have helped us evolve to a new logo, if we ever bend to the PC crowd.

I wish we would use the Louisiana state dog, the Catahoula Hound (see my avatar), we could use a live dog and/or a costume much like the University of Tennessee. The students choose Cayenne a few years ago, I have often wondered what their choices were 03-confused I agree with you about "Doug," I would think a wolf would be a good costume spirit leader vs. something thas has nothing to do with the school at all. By the way, glad to see you here Fanof49ASU 03-cool

Looking at Cayenne, I wonder that myself. I don't actually know any Cajuns (to the best of my knowledge), are they the type of people that would be offended by a Cajun Mascot? What would it look like?

Seriously, I apologize if I've offended any Cajuns out there. You never know what offends who these days....

GO TROJANS!

It has been tried before with unpopular results. Can you imagine the PC police today and what would happen if we could even come up with what a Ragin' Cajun looked like? (See ASU and Ole Miss for similar problems) The name "Ragin' Cajuns" is very cool (my biased opinion) but is almost impossible to put into a personable identity. Several "spirit" type mascots have been tried (even going back to the Bulldog the original nickname of the sports teams). Several suggestions among them include the Pelican (already taken by Tulane), the Alligator (already taken by Florida) to name a couple. While the idea of a dog is not original, I think adopting the Catahoula as our "spirit symbol" is better than copying the Gator, the Pelican and the Bulldog. The Catahoula is the state dog and a unique looking animal. Unlike some schools (like Troy) our nickname does not translate into an obvious and easily identifiable mascot. All I know is that the pepper sucks for a mascot. It is ok for a logo but looks like something that could be obscene  or just damn right stupid :bang: in a costume.
Just like we have too many name we also have too many logos and symbols. All these (names and logos) are too confusing and hinder establishing tradition, and you guys think you have problems. We have all this and the PC police like ASU.

That's the general opinion of all. At least it wears a jersey to the specific event.

Hey USM -- When that THING was first announced, there were plenty of us who were far more than just pi**ed -- we were downright hostile! However, we have calmed down and accepted it. The kids seem to love it, but I cannot relate to it at all.

I fully hated Red when he came out. I showed a picture to my 7 year old & he loved him. I thought I'd have a heart attack. When his 8th birthday came around he wanted an ASU birthday party.

We had some football players, cheerleadrs & yes Red come to my house for the party. The kids loved it. The players were class acts. They played with the kids & Red put on a big show.

But again, We're the Indians :frown:

Well that was one cool birthday party; what a lucky kid to have you for a dad. I bet that little guy was one happy camper and the envy of all his friends.
