JAGUARS OPEN THE SEASON WITH THREE STRAIGHT TOURNAMENTS

MOBILE, Ala.- Three consecutive tournaments to open the season highlights the 2004 South Alabama volleyball schedule, announced Thursday by second-year Jag coach Nicole Keshock. The Jaguars will play their first nine matches in tournament play including their own tournament the Asbury Suites Classic on Sept. 10-11.

USA returns all eight letterwinners from last year's team, but Keshock hopes that by spending the first three weeks of the season in tournaments, the Jags will gain the experience necessary to prepare for the always difficult Sun Belt schedule.

"This season is going to be very interesting," said Keshock. "We have eight players returning, including five seniors, so we do have more experience on the court. We ended the spring season on a good note and hopefully that will carry over into the fall."

The Jags begin the season at the Florida State University Tournament on Sept. 3-4 in Tallahassee, Fla., where they will meet Stetson, Sam Houston State and Florida State. Then, the Jaguars return home to host their first tournament since 1989. USA will face McNeese State twice and Southern Mississippi. The final regular season tournament hosted by the University of Central Florida will pit South Alabama against Western Carolina, Central Florida and Georgia on Sept. 17-18 in Orlando, Fla. USA opens the conference schedule at home with a pair of matches against New Mexico State (Sept. 24) and Denver (Sept.25) followed by five matches on the road against New Orleans, Florida International, North Texas, Louisiana-Lafayette and Southern Mississippi.

"Hopefully, we will see a consistent team throughout the season. We have some very talented freshmen coming in who are eager to play college ball. I think they will bring a good dynamic to the team."

The Jags welcome back all six starters, led by senior outside hitter Kim Courchesne (2.63 kills per game, 2.71 digs per game), senior outside hitter Morgan Flarity (3.43 kills per game, 2.32 digs per game) and senior setter Michelle Landa (9 assists per game).
