For example, a RB with 83 rating received a 75 rating from 247. That is a questionably huge difference. 83 means he can contribute right away as a rotation player. 75 means he is a long-term project who needs to be groomed for 2-3 years. So which is it?

They dont their rating was probably updated with the rivals and or ESPN grade or 24/7 finally looked at him its what the dots mean. This is why I like the composite two guys can look a kid and just have a difference of opinion. When you have three it smooths out the highs and lows. Some of your recruits will shoot up as well based on the Rivals and ESPN grade sometimes. 24/7 is a composite they have their own grade as well. I notice a lot that actually signed today got another sites grade added. Also the numbers do not translate exactly from Rivals or ESPN as they have different methods. Most of this is in the FAQ on 24/7

This guy https://247sports.com/player/blake-carroll-94076 had an .84 rating from 24/7 which is probably what you only saw early on now another service has been added and dropped it to .8255 this is the composite score. When they add the third grade if he has one it will change again. ESPN is probably the worst in rating lower tier guys. They do not change grades on offers or who they sign with. That is a myth. A kid can be looked at again if requested. I have seen this more than a kid being graded down.

100% correct. If a grade changed today it was either because another service's grade was added to the profile or 247 added their own. 247 has spent all day updating signees' profiles.

no I knew that. 247 score is updated as multiple experts chime in. I meant some of these experts just seem to give a default rating of 70-75 without much thought.

This guy is def a 3 star recruit. look at how quickly he changes directions. His speed and acceleration is there. He can break tackles. powerful legs. The "first" expert scouted him as 83 a long time ago (meaning the first expert didn't judge him in a hurry without the timing pressure to update everything on the signing day). This new "second" expert (from 247 apparently) who graded him today says he is a 75 rating developmental player...which makes me think...did he even bother to scout him or did he say "oh a sunbelt commit, 75 sounds good at that level." If he offered some kind of explanation, I'd be interested to read it..but this expert just assigned a number to him and moved on without any sort of breakdown.

I know the ratings ultimate don't matter for the G5 level. Most experts spend time to split hairs on 4-5 star recruits. Just feel bad for this kid but cant wait to see him and Dawson Hill start for us as double-headed monsters at RB.

247 doesn't have multiple people chiming in. There are only 2-3 scouts allowed to rank players, predominantly one doing 90% of it. It is not very common for a player to get downgraded after signing or committing (but it is much more likely for a player to get a new look and often higher ranking if commits/signs with a school of a higher level). It is pretty likely the rating changes you are seeing are the composite grades. After a player signs, 247 either looks for and adds in ratings from Rivals or ESPN or assigns one themselves if he has no 247 rating. USA, for instance, had a player that had a Rivals rating that translated to around a 78 on the composite. After he signed yesterday, 247 rated him a 74 which pulled him down to a .7645. Another player had a 78 from 247 but when his Rivals rating was added in he came out to an .8065. It may look like 247 is messing with the rankings but in reality they're just trying to complete the composite ranking.

Another thing to keep in mind is that since Scout doesn't exist, we're really only going to get 247 and Rivals ratings anymore. ESPN ratings are garbage and really only rate the top 300 players or so, none of whom are signing with any of our teams.

The composite is a simple average of the 4 services, and I took some time a while back to figure out what the various service rankings are equivalent to for that average. If you're interested in the math...

247 ratings are easy:

75 = 0.7500
79 = 0.7900
81 = 0.8100
etc

Rivals ratings are pretty easy at the 2/3 star level but get weird at the 4/5 star levels (instead of +0.222 per point, at 5.7 or 5.8 it switches to +0.333 per point):

5.2 = 0.7666
5.3 = 0.7888
5.4 = 0.8111
5.5 = 0.8333
5.6 = 0.8555

Scout ratings have a pretty dramatic leap from 2 star to 3 star. Because of that, getting a good scout rating was many times the difference in a guy being a composite 2 star or 3 star. But Scout and their weighty 3-stars are gone now and I'm curious to see if we'll see lower ratings across the board at the G5 level than we have in recent because of that.

2-star = 0.7666
3-star = 0.8333

ESPN ratings are all over the place and don't properly correspond to any 247 ratings. Ignore them. They're trash.

If anyone is interested in the math behind the full class composite, I can break that down too, but just know it involves scaling composite ratings based on class size, log functions, and hurt feelings. :)
