Potholes and Flats
Say you get a flat tire as a result of a pothole and it damages your car's rim where you have to get a new rim and service to realign the wheels. Do you think the jurisdiction where the damage to your car occurred owes some sort of financial compensation for repairing the damage because of their responsibility for repairing the potholes within their town limits? Anyone have any experiences with this?

This happened on a public street, not some parking lot......

RE: Potholes and Flats
Need to find out first if the municipality had any complaints with regard to that pothole and hadn't fixed it.

Otherwise, they would say it was your fault for not having a clear lookout and driving under control to avoid the pothole that a reasonably prudent person should be able to avoid.

Good luck!!

It may be too late now for the picture BUT that would be a VERY good use of your cell phones camera.

+1 Also, make sure to take pictures of the road and your car (if extra damage was done other than flat tire).

Research the jurisdiction of the road (City, County, Township, State, etc.), and then request information from the appropriate jurisdiction (search for a "Freedom of Information Act Request Form" on their website) on records of complaints of that road. Submitting the pictures and any supporting information in the form of an email to an elected official of that jurisdiction can sometimes help too.

Also, see if your state representative can help you recover funds, or if it is even possible to recover funds. At minimum, the state rep's office can cut through all the BS you would see if you start the process yourself. Each state reps office has a State of Illinois phonebook with phone numbers to all the right people. They can make one or two calls on your behald and probably be able to give you a definitive yea or nay.

RE: Potholes and Flats
Glad I found this thread. I recently was driving home from work and hit a pothole which left me with two huge bubbles in my tire. Obviously I didn't want to keep driving on it so I just went and spent $110 on a new tire. Is there anyway I can recoup some of my cost? The pothole was absolutely huge and I'm pretty pissed off right now.

RE: Potholes and Flats
I destroyed a wheel and tire on a pothole this winter, and couldn't get any compensation from the town, because they claimed to have signs up pointing out the pothole. Two days after I damaged my car, the pothole was repaired. That was a very douche like thing to do.
