ACC's John Swofford on @SiriusXMCollege: no conversation w/Notre Dame about joining but "if ever happens we'd look at adding another school"

So will the ACC be forever the bridesmaid when it comes to conference football for ND? The old Big East was and that conference might have survived had ND not had the NBC-TV deal that enabled them to operate autonomously.

Notre Dame never had a guaranteed games arrangement with the Big East. The Irish play 5 a year against the ACC, with all conferences members rotating home and away games. The two situations are not close to comparable.

When the Big East football conference first formed, it was agreed that Notre Dame would play 3 Big East football games per season. In theory, it would be easy for ND to accomplish that with BC, Miami, Pitt and Cuse in the ranks. They started out that way, but in 2003 when the first ACC raid happened, and the Big East had to back fill with CUSA schools and division 1 newbies (Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida, Uconn) there was no way that Notre Dame was going to honor that. The Big East was just happy to survive and needed ND for said survival.
