The format is really weird & it does need to change. Perhaps let the two lower seeds in each pool play with the winner advancing to take on the top seed? Have a true bracket. This would give the top 4 seeds a first round bye.

The format is weird, but by design. The top teams don't want too many games that would have the potential to mess up their bullpens heading into regionals and the bottom seeds just want a chance.

Only 2 teams sat home (I think Syracuse does not field a team) and the lower seeded teams had a chance to play their way into post season.

I kind of like the format better than the previous round robin ACC tournament that did not reward the higher seeds. This year if everyone in your robin goes 1-1, then the highest seed moves on. Unfortunately it can lead to a lot of meaningless games where the outcome is predetermined -- but given it is based on the body of work over the season I am pretty happy. Also, the higher seeds kinda have a bye if you figure they have room for error where the lower seeds do not.

Bonus is that the whole tournament is 4 games max, so all of the bullpens should be ready to go for NCAAs.

My version only does away with the meaningless games. If you lose your out. You would still have 4 pools of 3 teams except you would eliminate 1 game for the higher seed, saving their pitchers for the postseason, & lose the extra games. The lower seeds have to win in both formats but if they lose in their first game they don't get a second. For example, in pool A this year FSU would still play ND first & the winner would've then advanced to play Louisville. As the pool turned out, the only difference would have been that Louisville wouldn't have played ND since ND had already lost to FSU. No chance of ties, win to advance.

That would be a huge advantage to the 1 seed being able to have their entire bullpen untouched. I am sure that would cause more issues than the current setup.

Also, teams like to exercise their bullpens some in game situations to get ready for the tournament. This set up really is not that bad.

Louisville had nothing to lose in the ND game... they could have lost that game 100-0 (keep their starting pitcher even if they are having an off day) and they were still playing FSU for the right to advance as the higher seed. Notre Dame had the opportunity after the loss to get another quality win and maybe sneak into the tournament, or at least end their season on a winning note. The fans that traveled knew that they would be able to see their team at least twice.

Sure a double elimination tournament would be a better way to handle the championship, but you would have to cut the number of teams and the teams playing in the final (especially the one that went through the losers bracket) might have to make some choices about ACC Championship priority vs NCAAs.

I do prefer this format over double elimination, that would be to many games heading into the regionals or fewer teams involved. I just don't see the point in making teams play a game that doesn't have a bearing on the tournament. The only point to it is a chance to pad their resume.

Edit: this new format didn't help Miami get in, their 44 year streak has come to an end.
