Jacque Brown
It was just one game, but Brown looked really impressive against Towson and could help UNCW tremendously as we go forward this year. As he played, you could see him get into rhythm and he started playing with confidence. His ball handling ability and court vision were really needed.
Right now we start Cacok, Bryan, Fornes, Taylor and Talley. Estime, Gary and Kalina come off the bench for the most part. However, Cacok and Talley seem to get in foul trouble on a regular basis and we simply need relief at guard, or we need to go four guard when Cacok or Bryan come out. One of them HAS to be in the game at all times.
Brown could help in all of those scenarios. He looks like the best ball handler to take on the PG position when Talley sits. He also looked really good WITH Talley when Fornes was on the bench. As a Junior, he plays with more composure and confidence when he's on the floor and can push it up the court like Talley. He also has a more versatile offensive game than Gary or Estime. I hope he gets more time to see how he looks in the next few games.

RE: Jacque Brown
I was hopeful Gary would take the bull by the horns as the backup PG, but that hasn't happened yet. He's seemed a bit overwhelmed against CAA competition. In short....he's a freshman.
I was hoping Ty Taylor could operate as a combo guard, but he's proven to be a true 2-guard, who struggles with the ball in his hands when he's NOT trying to score in transition.
Brown has to be that guy by default. There's no way he can consistently defend these 6-3/6-4 physical guards that are all over the place in this league, but he certainly brings a lot to the table on offense. On D, his best usage would be when we utilize the press and zone defense.
Next year, we hand the keys at PG to Toews.

RE: Jacque Brown
Very few freshmen are up to the task of playing D1 level ball as a midmajor. You're right, Gary and Estime project out very good, but both are mostly spot up shooters, not ball handlers or capable of running the point. Fornes and Taylor both struggle handling the ball. As far as size, Brown was tough for the bigger guards as a defender, because he could beat them wherever they tried to go. That allowed him to stop penetration at the top. He also did an amazing job in transition, and was actually more under control on the break than Talley.
The good news if he can keep it up is that Talley can get a break at PG, as well as Taylor and Fornes, and our play doesn't falter. That break out performance may be the key to us getting over the hump as the season moves on. Pleasant surprise if it happens. I really liked the statement from Taylor that he kills everyone in practice. That tells us he has the capability, but just needs to bring it to the table on game day. Must have been exciting for him to do it in a big game, in front of a packed house.

Definitely rooting for the kid. I did some PA Announcing at CFCC games and got to work quite a few of his games, and he was always a lot of fun to watch. We need to hope he gets "recruited over" next year for the good of the program, but that doesn't mean we can't root for him and hope he sees some significant court time.

RE: Jacque Brown
Gary's Ball handling skills have not improved much over the course of the year. I remember he ran point most of the 2nd half in our come back @ ECU, and I was impressed. With that being said, I think Jacque should be the main option to back up Talley. His size isn't ideal on defense, but he does seem to stick to his man and pester them. Which is more than way can say for either of the freshman. Also, he provides more on the offensive end. Gary and Estime were supposed to be good shooters coming in but haven't been getting them to fall consistently. Jacque might not deserve 28 minutes every game but I have no problem seeing him out there for 15-20.

Chris Lykes at the Miami Hurricanes is a 5'7" and weighs 161 lbs. He's a fantastic player and size hasn't stopped him in the ACC.

He's listed at 5'7, but from what Gary Hahn said on Sunday, that is generous.

RE: Jacque Brown
Gary may not have improved as a PG, but he has improved quite a bit in other areas. Especially defensively. He frustrated the pg for NU to the point that #4 reached out and shoved him while holding the ball out front. It happened down the stretch with it being a two or three point game. Gary did his job, while the officials didn't do theirs. But I'm thinking we are going to have a lockdown defender in Gary. I'm impressed with his growth in confidence.

I thought Jacque looked great on defense against the bigger Towson guards. He is quicker than Gary, which is better for help defense also.

RE: Jacque Brown
Kudos to Jacque for his performance against Towson. Consistant performances like the other night will result in a much better season for the Hawks.
The biggest thing for Gary & Estime is to get bigger - hit the weights and add some bulk.
