It's official: Rutgers got a lousy deal from the Big Ten | Politi
http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index....e_big.html
Quote:Still, four and a half years later, it is impossible not to look at the financial details and not conclude that Delany gave Rutgers a lousy deal -- and it's one that is making it harder for Rutgers to build the infrastructure necessary to truly compete in its new league.
Big Ten rival Michigan revealed this week that, thanks to the league's new TV contract, it is expecting a payout of $51.1 million from the conference in 2017-18. That is the same chunk of cash that Ohio State, Indiana, Illinois and the rest will add to their coffers.
But not Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights are projected to get just $11.6 million. As the athletic department races to build the facilities needed to compete in the conference, it will receive just one-fifth of the revenue that its well-heeled rivals are banking.
That will change in the coming years, of course. Rutgers will get $14.9 million in 2018-19 and $19.3 million in 2019-20, and then -- finally -- it will get a full share of that revenue pie in 2020-21.
All will be forgotten then. But if that projected $51.1 million payout stays the same the next three years, the 11 established conference members (not counting other relative newcomers Maryland and Nebraska) will have pocketed $177 million more over the six-year transitional period than Rutgers.
Next time some yokel yaps about how they don't belong I'll point to this.

Beggars can't be choosers. Rutgers wanted out of the AAC and the Big Ten threw them a lifeline. They wisely took it and all will be forgotten before too long.

what's worse? A lousy deal or no deal?
Rutgers gladly took whatever what was offerred during the transition and they liked it!!
Rutgers could have been offered $0 for 6 years and they still would have took it.

Three things are true here.
1. Rutgers got a lousy deal from the BIG 10.
2. Rutgers was lucky to get ANY deal; let alone one that pulled it out of AAC purgatory and into the most prestigious academic and athletic association going.
3. Politi and Co are desperate to save a failing newspaper, so they write articles geared to getting clicks on the website.

this is such a stupid article by our local anti-Rutgers trash writer.
You know what a lousy deal is? Being stuck in the AAC. Rutgers in another couple of years is about to get PAID, and PAID for the rest of our lives other than the highly unlikely chance of the B1G imploding in a few decades. Rutgers is good, we've won the freaking college football lottery, We R B1G.

I for one, am not a Rutgers hater. I happen to think they and Maryland were excellent additions.
I think the point that the writer misses or simply doesn't acknowledge is that everyone has to buy in, pay their dues, whatever one wishes to call it. I'm sure a football blue blood like Nebraska wasn't thrilled about it either but when that full share check cashes this fall, they'll be happy, just as Rutgers will be in a few years.
I'd simply ask the writer to check back in a few years and tell us what the deal is then.....

Politi is infamous for being a clown of a writer... all of his articles are written with the purpose of pissing people off in NJ. He specializes in articles pointing out how much Rutgers sucks, ignores the facts that Rutgers has overhauled their entire athletic department, and makes sure to interview those anti-athletics professors in order to prove that Rutgers is wasting millions on football. This time he decided to troll Rutgers fans in a different method. He's not worth reading.

When we add new partners to the Physician Practice I work for, they vest over 6 years. The new partners struggle (for a physician) to maintain the physician lifestyle for a few years, then make bank. But they still make more in year one than a non=partner, and far more than 98% of Americans. This is Rutgers.

There's almost no reasonable Rutgers fans complaining over the structure of the deal to enter the B1G. Rutgers had almost zero leverage and their pains now have almost nothing to do with the deal and everything to do with a string of massive mistakes made by incompetent AD's and coaches, and to some extent, the president of the University. Pernetti hiring Rice, Pernetti hiring Flood, Pernetti/Barchi only suspending Rice vs firing him immediately, Barchi putting a committee in charge of hiring Hermann, Barchi hiring Eddit Jordanalmost everything Hermann did while she was AD, almost everything Flood did while he was HC. Barchi allowing the hiring of Eddie Jordan, who hadn't accumulated any college coaching experience in over 20 years.
Rutgers is damn lucky to be in the position they are in.
I'm not a Politi-hater as much as some of the fan base. His views are not popular but are oftentimes true and he won't act as the PR firm for the University. This is obviously a click bait article, however, for the fan base and the fan base of the rest of the B1G.

I agree that everyone should have to buy into a league like the B1G. BUT part of that means not having enough money to upgrade facilities/hire top coaches and the athletic programs will struggle. Though I see lots of B1G fans on places like Off Tackle who ***** about how much we suck and don't belong. Well if you don't want us to suck then give us more money!!! haha Chicken or Egg folks?

HAHA...OTE is a special place. They have snark and sarcasm down. You certainly need some thick skin and your big boy trousers to go there. Rutgers does get hammered pretty hard there on a regular basis. But I think you have it exactly right with the chicken/egg comment. Wish y'all the best of luck.

As an IU fan, I agree 100%.......and I understand the "threw them a lifeline" sentiment......that RU wasn't owed anything et al......that's true. However, it's also true that all the Big 10 administrators knew that RU's facilities were sub par and that they were being set up for 10 years of ass kickings in the non-revenue sports. I don't see how that benefits the athletes and fans of the other 13 schools. And it sure seems less than "sporting". I think the deal should have been somewhat front-loaded so that RU could build the facilities and hire the coaches necessary to be more competitive. The way the Big 10 dealt with RU vi. MD was rather crass, to say the least. Having taken advantage of RU's desperation, the other Big 10 schools should not complain about the result.
