Big Ten Power Rankings after Week 8
1. (2) Michigan: Had already determined I was going to put them back here at halftime of the OSU game and then the 4th quarter of the OSU/PSU game happened.
2. (1) Ohio State: If Ohio State did not have the win over Wisconsin and Penn State had pulled off the comeback vs. Pitt, the Loins would be here. I can't make myself put Ohio State below Wisconsin though and I still can't make myself put Penn State above Wisconsin.
3. (3) Wisconsin: Won a big rivalry game on the road. They cannot afford another let down though.
4. (5) Penn State: Huge win for Franklin and just like that Penn State actually is still in the conference title race. Their toughest remaining game is likely a home game vs. Iowa. This has been a steadily improving team and will be interesting to see if they come back down a little or keep getting a bit better.
5. (4) Nebraska: Very low for one of the remaining undefeated teams in the whole nation. Win this week and they'll jump up a lot in my rankings.
6. (6) Northwestern: Team definitely nothing like the one that lost early in year. They are competing to get to Indianapolis although I think their ceiling is just a bit lower than that.
7. (7) Iowa: Team is somewhat hit and miss. Have never found what they had last year.
8. (8) Indiana: A good season, but still waiting for that good win. Michigan State felt like it earlier in year, but results since then don't suggest it was.
9. (9) Minnesota: Extremely close game vs. a Rutgers team who had struggled. Still won it and have wins over multiple teams below them in rankings.
10. (11) Maryland: Not sure I wouldn't take them in a rematch vs. Minnesota.
11. (12) Purdue: Very surprised to move them up again, but I'd be inclined to take them over the Spartans right now.
12. (10) Michigan State: Hopefully this is just a one year set back.
13. (13) Illinois: Playing Michigan this week was not what they needed.
14. (14) Rutgers: I think this is an improving team and had some breaks work against them. I don't know that improvement will show up in their record, but finally showing signs of moving right direction.
This week (based on my rankings):
#9 Minnesota at #13 Illinois
#1 Michigan at #12 Michigan State
#4 Penn State at #11 Purdue
#10 Maryland at #8 Indiana
#6 Northwestern at #2 Ohio State
#3 Wisconsin at #5 Nebraska
