Schools seem pretty good at keeping this information pretty secret. I remember last year when we joined the Sun Belt there was speculation everywhere but it really was only the day before the press conference that the cat was out of the bag.

RE: Reports out of missouri saying JMU and MSU recieved invite
I went to that press conference last year when we brought the band in to play. It was exciting last year. The weeks leading up to it the rumors were all over the place. At one point I believed only us and NMSU were going, then it was App and NMSU, then it was only App and us. Idaho seemed to not even be in the discussion then bam Idaho wAs invited too (for FB).

Benson is here for our Spring game tomorrow and I am told he will be interviewed by our radio guys sometime tomorrow during the Spring game. I am sure he will be questioned about Sun Belt expansion. Maybe he will say something other than the company line that we need a 12th football playing school from the eastern part of the conference.

I bet he mentions Liberty at least once.

Kleinlein has publicly said the Sun Belt has voted to expand and that it was a goal to have a 12th fb playing member by June 1.
I have no sources and limited insight. But it seems to me that this is the one confirmed fact about this whole situation: the conference wants a 12th football-playing member. All the rest is rumor and conjecture.
With that in mind, I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that the conference will do exactly that, and nothing more: add a single new school to bring the number of football-playing members to 12. I expect the invitee to be JMU or, if JMU says no, EKU.
I view EKU rather than Liberty as the most likely fallback choice for several reasons. It's in the right geographic location. It has a winning football tradition and a 22,000-seat stadium it filled to capacity 10 years ago and therefore has proven potential to fill again. EKU's basketball team is coming off an OVC championship and NCAA tournament appearance. The school is a good academic and institutional fit in the SBC, and doesn't bring the political baggage Liberty would.
As for MSU, I don't see any reason to invite the Bears right now. The conference already has six western football members. MSU's stadium seats only 16,300 and there's no approved plan or funding to expand it (the current renovation will replace seats but not add any). And no one else is likely to invite MSU to move up, so what's the hurry? Better to wait a couple of years and then decide whether the Bears have advanced enough to bring them in and push Idaho out.
The one thing you are forgetting is that right now part of our issue is that no one can agree on who they want as a 12th member. If the only schools voting were out East, this would have been decided already. But convincing a West school that a JMU/Liberty makes sense to the league is hard.
How do you know that they can't agree on a 12th school? Why would a school in the west have a problem with JMU?

I doubt there are major issues with JMU...but if I was a West school and I knew I had Missouri State saying they would be ready, I would be certainly making sure everyone knew that I was voting for JMU in exchange for Missouri State getting an invite.
Liberty is another story. I'm still not sure the West schools all think expanding East is in their best interest if its not a JMU type. If JMU turns the belt down, I could easily see us inviting just Missouri State and calling it a day

I bet Benson is really terrible at poker.
"No really, this time I really really really have 4 aces in my hand"
"Liberty, Liberty, Liberty - dont call my bluff JMU!"
<then Benson promptly folds again when JMU laughs>
Then the cards are re-shuffled and dealt back out for the June 1, 2015 game.

Through this whole process the MAC guys seem to think the SBC is desperate, when actually it is only Benson that is. Most fans are content with holding at 11.
If anything this last week has produced a positive for the SBC general public, we have learned that Idaho is a short term member and will allow for FCS programs like Mo. St. to improve over the next two years. I'd say our hand has improved from a fan's perspective with that news.

I wouldn't gage that most fans are content with 11 members. We aren't desperate but all candidates mentioned bring something to the table for the conference. Yes, even Liberty.
I want a CCG. I want JMU. - But I'd be fine with LU. Missouri State means very little to me - I'd rather have LU.
I think the MAC programs are afraid of the rise of the Sun Belt, and for good reason. IMOP - The MAC is the weakest of all G5 conferences today. Most of them probably don't believe that is true right now, but the ones that don't believe that it is already true can probably see the writing on the wall. I'd absolutely HATE to be in the MAC. I'd take the invite if it was our only path - Heck I would have taken a "WAC-E" invite if we would have had to for the move to FBS. But I think some of their jeers and fun pokes are out of fear. I suppose the ones that rank basketball first are just fine with the MAC - and that is fine with me. Different strokes as they say! But in Football - they are the bottom of the pack and I see no upward movement for them with the exception of NIU. If you really value the future of your football program, why would you want a MAC invite if the Sun Belt were an option? I can see the argument for CUSA, although we have risen above them on the gridiron as well.

RE: Reports out of missouri saying JMU and MSU recieved invite
Why are almost all the MAC posters so opposed to JMU doing anything.
No real indication that they they would ever take JMU. And if offered
would JMU really want to play in Eastern Michigan in December in front of 4,500.

Let me rephrase that most fans are content with staying at 11 unless JMU is willing or waiting a year for Mo. St. (or comparable program).

There is no assurance we would go to a conference championship game even if we went to 12.
Last I heard the conference was pretty divided over it.

RE: Reports out of missouri saying JMU and MSU recieved invite
well would these conferences stack up by comparison?:
EKU - WKU
JMU - Marshall
Liberty - ODU
App St - Charlotte
GA St - FIU
GA So - FAU
Troy - MTSU
__________
USA - UAB
UL - USM
ULM - La Tech
AR St - UNT
MO St - Rice
TX St - UTSA
NM St - UTEP
_______
UALR
UTA
I know 14/16 is a large conference but its not unrealistic to think it could be effective and very competitive.

I would want to see hard numbers of what sort of revenue we could be guaranteed to get out of it. I don't know that they would be that impressive.
I don't rule it out, but until I see some huge benefit for having one I'm going to remain very skeptical.
Benson wanting a special event to oversee isn't enough for me.

The benefit would be an extra argument that we desrve a spot in a college football playoff format. Especially if one of our schools go undefeated. Hard to argue a seat at the table without a conference championship.

It can work both ways as evidenced by Houston. I'd also like to see firm bowl guarantees for whoever loses the championship game. No jumping over the loser of the championship game to grab a bowl slot. Not a password protected guideline...an actual guarantee. We had a defacto championship game a couple of years ago and the loser (MTSU) sat at home. There is more to it than just saying, hey now we have a championship game.
