Yeah but football drives the bus and they are newborns in that realm.

I don't really think the distinction is necessary, running a football program is not that much different and it's not like it's the basketball and softball coaches running the program, they have football people running their football program. USA is the old guard of the SBC.

There is a huge distinction, in total percentage of cost towards your budget. The football operational budget is the largest expense for most FBS programs. They were running an athletic program that didn't have football, similar to Denver and ULAR. Old guard, but no football.

Did not mean to slight any school but just was interested in how the longer standing members of the Belt would view bringing in UMass as a football-only school.

No, even the idea of adding them as a football only member is preposterous. If they want in the Sun Belt then they must be a full sports member. We want to add the best all around program that is available. Not just an also ran football program that couldn't cut it in the MAC where they are geographically a fit.

I still don't see why it matters, is football different than any other sport? Sure, but does it really differ that much when it comes to adding members even if it is just for football? It doesn't, but you disagreeing with me rates pretty low on the surprise scale.

And it's already been pointed out, but maybe you missed it Troy joined in 2004...

Why are we going after the good basketball school's terrible football teams only. If we can't have them for all sport then don't take them at all. We did just fine with what we had last year in football.

They're an existing FBS member that's soon to be homeless they get you to 12 for football without pulling anyone up from FCS. Is it the right move? I don't know, but it'sa means to an end.

ULM started SBC play in 2001... Troy went independent in 2001 but still played several SBC members that year. Troy might as well had been a SBC member since 2001 in football

Let's think about this for a second.

UMASS is a fine flagship university that is making major investments in its football program, sure, it has about the same win total as Idaho, but, they have the same amount of wins as Idaho and NMSU... So that point is completely moot. They are also already FBS. No transition. They also pull additional states into the footprint.

In addition, they are a former rival of JMU. Could pull them in without feeling they are too far north.

Bringing UMASS and JMU as a package and get NMSU in all sports... All that left is a handshake agreement to bring MSU in next year and we are done.

You played like seven or eight SBC games over a three year period, by that logic there are SEC members who might as well be SBC members or Big Ten members who might as well be MAC members...

And it doesn't surprise me that you would find some reason to disagree with the obvious. It matters in this manner, they saved millions of dollors not playing football period for years. There was no true investment or commitment to NCAA football or the Sun Belt football brand for the initial years. So tell me once again why they should be mentioned in the same breathe as ASU, UL or ULM? Sorry you think that a program that wasn't willing to invest in football or build the Sun Belt football brand during the initial years deserves mention when discussing the initial founding Sun Belt football programs.

We played 10 SBC members in those 3 years if you include FAU and FIU

We knew we were headed to the SBC in 2000 that's why we went independent for 3 years before.
