I take the numbers on BB expenses with a grain of salt. I strongly doubt UNC's expenses were so far below those of Duke and UK.

As we have seen on other threads, there are big differences in the way schools allocate costs by sport. I could easily see how Duke and UK, whose athletic identity and contributions are so closely tied to basketball, might allocate more "overhead" costs to hoops rather than football. Despite its history of football mediocrity, UNC might like to portray that sport as equally important when they report.
But there are also direct costs, like coaches' salaries, where Carolina hoops would lag significantly behind both Duke and UK. For all his success and pedigree, Williams is paid significantly less than Calipari or Coach K. Over ten years, that accounts for a lot of the difference.

I've wondered whether UNC is paying part of its BB salaries through the Educational Foundation (the Rams Club) to avoid public scrutiny of how much it pays its coaches. Paying a head coach $6 million a year or whatever it is wouldn't sit well with some members of the public at a time when UNC is begging the legislature for funds.

Nike pays Most of Roy Williams salary directly and doesn't contribute to UNC's bottom line.

At the time of his most recent contract extension, the Raleigh News & Observer reported that Williams' total compensation, including his contracts with Nike and Learfield Sports, would be $3.9 million a year. About $1.7 million of that was to come from Nike.

If that's all he's really getting, his agent is an idiot because Roy is being underpaid by about $5 million a year. That's the going rate at places like Duke, UK, KU and UNC. Probably, the Rams Club is paying Roy the difference. It's just not showing up on UNC's books.
