Mens Basketball Offseason - ksu315 - 03-13-2018 03:23 PM

A lot always seems to happen and much of it unexpected. My hopes:

- We don't lose any players and coaches this offseason. With 800 transfers nationwide odds tell me we'll have a couple. I worry about Duling. He seemed like the whipping boy late in year and i'd suspect he thought he'd have a much bigger year than he did. Plus with no posts graduating is he going to want to wait another year to be the guy. Please don't go BJ!!

- I hope they actually start building/renovating the alleged practice facility

- I hope the FBI investigation blows up for all the big boys. It will be entertaining to watch.

- We find 2 shooters to add to mix

- Coach Haut and Mitch Peterson lock themselves in the gym and tweak his shot. he has all the other intangibles....

Why not get Kyle Korver or Mark Price in the off season to conduct a shooting session for the whole team. Mark is probably looking for something to do anyway. It would be money well spent.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason - anti-zip - 03-13-2018 07:26 PM

Here's the keys to the off season as I see it.

1. Fill the void on the wing. Probably will need two of these possibilities to happen to lock that down. Harris takes on a big role. Gholston takes on a big role. Duling improves his perimeter defense and starts getting minutes at the 3. Peterson improves a lot. We add someone 6'5" and up that can contribute from day one.

2. Walker needs to become more efficient. This one has been important each of the last two off seasons but we've yet to see much of a difference. I thought he showed more consistent effort all year and improved his shot selection in the second half of the year. But it didn't yield better results probably in large part because he's usually the focal point of other teams best defender. Just imagine how much better we would be if he could hit 42% from the floor and 35% from three (not crazy numbers at all). I think he should have the ball in his hands less, and he needs to become better at moving without the ball. Beat your man without the ball so you have more space to work when you get it.

3. De la Rosa gets his fouls and turnovers under control. Really this is kind of one in the same. He averaged 3.3 turnovers per game and you gotta figure at least 1 of those is an offensive foul per game. So even just significantly cutting down the offensive fouls goes a long way.

4. Avery becomes more assertive in the offense. We all know he had an absurd assist to turnover ratio. He was also 4th on the team in fg% and first in 3pt%. Honestly with how efficient he is the offense should really be running through him.

5. Pippen becomes more consistent and more of a focal point. I honestly believe a strong argument could be made that Pippen is our most talented player. He had the highest +/- per 100 possessions of any player on the team. He really checks off every box you could ask for in a power forward with the possible exception of muscle but I didn't feel like he got pushed around this year. For what ever reason we'd regularly see him have pedestrian games. Part of it is I don't think he's featured in the offense as much as he should.

6. Duling makes big strides. Everyone can tell he's oozing with potential and his offensive game really came around later in the year. Now it's time for him to step up and force his way into the picture for a starting spot. I really like the idea of him at the 3 but him getting minutes at the 4 next to Pippen has a lot of potential too. In terms of +/- that pairing was solid this year. However, they were really bad at giving up offensive rebounds. So that pairing has the potential to be really really good if they get the rebounding issues under control. Which more muscle for Pippen, a bigger 3, and Duling understanding better when to not go for a block all will help in that area.

7. None of the rotation guys transfer. We only lose 2 seniors but by seasons end we were down to an 8 or sometimes 9 player rotation. So if 1 or 2 more guys leave suddenly we could be down to 4 or 5 rotation players returning. So we'd be right back to dealing with a lot of turnover.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason - FlashPan - 03-13-2018 11:01 PM

From what I have read or heard Duling is at Kent State because of the superior fashion program. So I don't look for him to be leaving Kent any time soon. I mean.... who has the most fashionable hair on the team...

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason - mmucha1986 - 03-14-2018 11:51 AM

I don’t see De La Rosa or Peterson being a part of the program next year. No inside info, just a hunch.

Peterson I can see but why De La Rosa?

He’s a 7-footer who will be eligible to play right away for anyone.

So he can graduate this spring/summer for sure? I've been wondering about that but haven't heard anything. It would be a shame to lose him and depending on the situation he goes to it could be a big mistake. I doubt he'll find a team at a higher level that is willing to run their offense through him as frequently as we do.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason - Muskrat - 03-15-2018 04:33 AM

This is the state of college basketball today. Each season is basically ad hoc because of all the transfers. And if the NCAA does away with the transfer rule altogether, as has been discussed, it will be even more so. I believe that any college student ought to be able to play for the school he/she attends without having to "sit out", but massive transfers does detract from the quality of the product from a fan's standpoint.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason - delflash - 03-15-2018 04:59 AM

Yes, things have changed quite a bit since I started following college basketball in 1970. Back then, rosters were very stable. With exceptions, of course, each team basically had 3-4 freshman, 3-4 sophomores, 3-4 juniors, and 3-4 seniors. Each season, the seniors would graduate, and a new crop of freshman would be added. I have to think this was better for the quality of play, but also fan interest. Now, it's like every season there is a new team, like pick-up basketball.

Players aren't as patient today. The transfers will work out for some, but others would have been probably better off staying put. Hopefully, we can keep most of our best players this transfer season.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason - Muskrat - 03-15-2018 06:08 AM

Agree, Delflash. And there used to be 15 scholarships allowed. And until the 1972/73 season there were freshmen or JV teams. They filled up the roster with non-scholarship players via try-outs. I played on the freshman team, though basically third team. Things change. The NBA is considering going back to letting players be drafted from high school, as when LeBron James was drafted. If that happens, those players won't be at power-6 schools a year, which means that the available talent for schools will be weakened somewhat and it will cascade downwards. It has been my experience that very few athletes have a true self-evaluation. A few do. A few even are better than they think they are. But most players aren't really as good as they believe themselves to be.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason - Slinkin Street Flash - 03-15-2018 07:39 AM

For me, this was a disappointing season for the Flashes. I had a lot of expectations that they'd do better - only losing 2 rotation players from last year's MAC Championship - but I felt we were worse. 17-17 after 22-14 last year? For the first time, I wouldn't be disappointed if we replace Senderhoff.

Digging into the numbers, the I do feel that a few players did improve over 2016-2017. A lot of people grumble about De La Rosa, but he did show improvement - 41% shooting to 56%, 78% from the line. When he was on the floor, I felt the Flashes did better. He's a center, you have to expect him to get a lot of fouls, he might improve there a bit. Could you imagine what a drag he would have been if he shot 41% this year?

Danny Pippen looks like he has the potential - but he shot 41% this year. It would be great if he could improve to 56% like DLR did from sophomore-to-junior. He also tended to catch a lot of fouls.

I think Avery improved a lot - even without looking at going from 5.1 ppg to 10.3 ppg. He looked like he was in control when he was on the floor. And this improvement really started with the run at the end of last season.

Petereson was a disappointment, he didn't seem as strong of a defender, and his offense was worse. Last year he was pretty bad shooting, at 35% from the field and 30% for 3s, and this year his numbers went down.

Zabo? All the times I saw him, he looked like he was trying too much, but when he got hot, he could carry the team for 5-10 minutes. Too many fouls though. Running down his game log, he fouled out of 6 games (DLR fouled out of 9)

Duling and Ridenour, they played their roles well. I'm disappointed Frederick and Nwankwo couldn't earn more playing time.

Jaylin Walker, to me was the biggest disappointment. I was expecting him to be at least 2nd team All-MAC, and with all the 1st team All-MACers leaving from last year, he could have made 1st team. I can't say I saw any improved skills in 2017-2018 over 2016-2017. FG%, 3P%, FT% all about the same. I think if he learned better shot selection, and if he would have shot 43% instead of 38% from the field, he'd have been about 18 ppg, and I think he would have been a 1st team All-MAC

A bit confused by this summation ....

I think a better view is .... a lot of players got better, but the record does not reflect it. And that may be a point of later discussion.

Most of what is written here credits improvement by ADR, JAvery and even Pippen ... and while Zabo did indeed have foul trouble, his offensive numbers greatly improved as well over last season ..

Losing Hall/Edwin was no small subtraction as there was no proven rising 'step-in' talent at either position. Just think where this team would have finished w/o ADR, JA and Zabo's improvement.

As for JW ... His role changed from 'carrying the team' expectations early in the season to maybe a 2/3 option late. Not easy to do on the fly when handed the keys, then taken away.

All that said, looking back over the schedule still probably could have won 20. But JW aside, there was not one player on the roster considered a top tier starter to begin last season ... and that will be just the opposite to start next season.

PS ... Agree Peterson really needs to improve ... and Frederick/Nwankwo may have been recruiting misses.

That cascsde will be lessened by the fact that parents don't want their kids playing football. I think a higher percentage of kids will be choosing basketball over football for the foreseeable future.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason - fallsdog - 03-15-2018 12:46 PM

In short, I think if he tries to run the offense through Adonis De La Rosa next season he is doing all involved a disservice.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason - anti-zip - 03-15-2018 01:04 PM

Idk if I would call Frederick and Nwankwo recruiting misses yet. I know Nwankwo was coming off a knee injury last year. Not sure how much of a role that played in his development but if he sticks around he has two years left and is still built like a house. As for Frederick, I thought he was dropped from the rotation too quickly but did work back into it late. I would've really liked to see what he became with a regular role all season. With our big man foul troubles it's really head scratching that he didn't get more chances. If AD does leave he could be really important to next season.

Agreed if AD is the same player he is today. Remember we recruited him at 320 and his first year he played at around 280. Then this year he was an entirely different player as well. So he has shown the ability to show vast improvement in an offseason.

Hmmm... Historically, it seems, the best Kent State teams have ALL run their offense through the post. If not ADR, then who?

Walker
Pippen
Duling
Somebody new???

Remember ... Buffalo was so fearful of ADR the Bulls not only did not want him scoring inside ... Oats said he did not want ADR touching the ball anywhere on the court.

Oats said ADR scoring and passing was key to Kent's upset over UB during the season, and key to beating Ball State to advance to the semifinals ...

ADR is probably a 10-minute player on a power conference team ... no argument there ... But in the MAC he is a huge difference-maker.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason - axeme - 03-15-2018 05:23 PM

I would think ADL would be happy with the great strides he’s made in Kent. It’s really been remarkable, and I would think that would continue over the summer and into next season.

Add in the progress D. Pippen made—at times he was the dominant player on the floor—and I think our inside game will be outstanding if both continue to make progress. Scary in some ways.
