UNT Students Approve Athletic Fee Increase - Side Show Joe - 02-19-2018 06:30 PM

The University of North Texas athletic department will soon have a whole lot more to work with financially after the school's students voted in favor of an increase in their fees to support the school's sports programs last week.

UNT's students voted 1,307 to 1,059 in favor of the proposal that will increase the school's student athletic fee from $10 per semester credit hour to $16.25 while also decreasing a student services fee $2 per credit hour.

The result is an increase of $4.25 per semester credit hour. A student taking 15 hours of classes will see their fees rise $63.75 per semester and $127.50 per year.

Kudos to the administration for finding a way to push this through, despite the skyrocketing costs of college in Texas. This is one time that student apathy actually helped IMO.

Yay for the additional 3.5 Million or so to the AD budget... Now [;ease go and dump half of that into a baseball team and facility!!!

Does this mean y'all are finally getting a baseball team?

Highly doubt it. The AD is focused on strengthening football and the basketball programs. I'd love to see baseball back at UNT too, but I'm fairly certain it will remain a long term addition for now. I'm hoping these additional funds will help us transition away from our annual body-bag game football scheduling, and only consider home and home series in the future.

Thanks.

I just hope our AD is wise in how he invests this new income. Baker has made some smart moves since taking over at North Texas. It will be interesting to see what his next move is for increasing funding. I doubt he is finished.

Did they know to vote? I'd hate for my tuition to rise simply because the only ones who knew to vote were those paying attention to athletics things.

As of this fall, we have just over 38,300 students enrolled. Almost 10,000 more than UNCC

Yes, there was a concerted campaign by the AD and SGA to get the word out about the vote with emails, posters, flyers, tables set up on campus. If I remember correctly for my time there, this is a pretty average voter turnout for NT.

37973-29317=8656

8656 is not almost 10,000

The latest data submitted by UNT to the US Dept of Education listed 25,486 full time undergrads. These are the ones who will be charged the fee but is still a huge number and will definitely bloat the athletic dept income.

RE: UNT Students Approve Athletic Fee Increase - ghostofclt - 02-20-2018 10:22 AM

clt says Charlotte has almost 24,000 undergrads. almost 10,000 more than UNT

RE: UNT Students Approve Athletic Fee Increase - msm96wolf - 02-20-2018 11:07 AM

Don't get the Clt/UNT squabble. Apathetic non voters is the American way. I have no sympathy if those against it was to lazy to vote. The increased fees don't appear that outrages and UNT students voted. I say UNT handled it the best way possible.

RE: UNT Students Approve Athletic Fee Increase - NorthTexan95 - 02-20-2018 11:07 AM

To be fair, this is the second time the vote was taken. Kids have really short attention spans. :)

The last vote was nullified because the opposition used a university logo on their flyers or something similar. Yes, the first vote didn't count because the losing side made a mistake. Geez ...

UNC reported 20,257 full time undergraduates for same period that UNT reported 25,486. These are submitted by universities annually in regards to federal law, the u.s. dept of education, etc in respect to gender equity so I dont think anyone would disrespect their reliability. There is always a big difference in what schools report as overall enrollment and the number of FULL TIME UNDERGRADS on their rolls.

RE: UNT Students Approve Athletic Fee Increase - ghostofclt - 02-20-2018 02:43 PM

clt says this isn't a big deal. how much money can be generated by increasing fees on just 2,366 students?
