CAA Postseason Awards: Who you got? - Seahawk Nation 08 - 02-07-2018 10:14 PM

With such a long wait for our next game, let's discuss some league awards projections/predictions, shall we?

First, let's take a look at who has taken home league honors, for Player of the Week or Rookie of the Week:

POW Honors

* Justin Wright-Foreman, Hofstra: 3 (1 in league play)
* Joe Chealey, Charleston: 2 (both in league play)
* Nathan Knight, W&M: 2 (both in league play)
* Tramaine Isabell, Drexel: 2 (1 in league play)
* Vasa Pusica, NU: 1 (league play)
* Tyler Seibring, Elon: 1 (league play)
* Zane Martin, Towson: 1 (league play)
* Grant Riller, Charleston: 1
* Stuckey Mosley, JMU: 1
* Ryan Daly, Delaware: 1
* Connor Burchfield, W&M: 1
* Mike Morsell, Towson: 1
* David Cohn, W&M: 1
* Eli Pemberton, Hofstra: 1

ROW Honors

* Ryan Allen, Delaware: 3 (2 in league play)
* Matt Lewis, JMU: 3 (2 in league play)
* Kevin Anderson, Delaware: 2
* Darius Banks, JMU: 1 (league play)
* Tomas Murphy, NU: 1 (league play)
* Jalen Ray, Hofstra: 1
* Jarvis Doles, Drexel: 1

What clearly stands out here is we are the only team in the league that has not produced a Player of the Week or Rookie of the Week, which is highly disappointing. It's almost criminal that Cacok has not yet taken home this honor at least once.

Definitely a better Seahawk presence here, especially in scoring, where we have 4 guys in the Top 25.

OK, now for the picks. Here's how I would break down the All-CAA Teams:

All-CAA Teams

[Image: Joe+Chealey+Charleston+v+Wichita+State+6HWqkM95su_l.jpg]

Third Team: Ryan Daly, Delaware; Grant Riller, Charleston; Rokas Gustys, Hofstra; Eli Pemberton, Hofstra; Jordon Talley, UNCW

Second Team: Tyler Seibring, Elon; Zane Martin, Towson; Stuckey Moseley, JMU; David Cohn, W&M; Devontae Cacok, UNCW

First Team: Justin Wright-Foreman, Hofstra; Joe Chealey, Charleston; Nathan Knight, W&M; Tramaine Isabell, Drexel; Vasa Pusica, NU

The 3rd-team picks were somewhat difficult, as it means the likes of Connor Burchfield, Mike Morsell, and freshman Ryan Allen fall into the "Honorable Mention" pile.

But the First and Second teams were quite easy. Pusica gets the nod over Seibring on the first team based on the fact that so much of the Northeastern offense flows through Pusica. It's not easy to be nearly in the top 10 in the league in scoring AND lead the league in assists. And every time I've watched him play, he's been very impressive.

Now for the freshman honors.

CAA All-Rookie Team

[Image: Matt_Lewis_ODU_111317.jpg]

All-Rookie Team: Ryan Allen, Delaware; Matt Lewis, JMU; Kevin Anderson, Delaware; Darius Banks, JMU, Tomas Murphy, NU

Banks and Murphy earn these spots by virtue of their ROW Honors in league weeks. Murphy's (7.1 ppg, .569 FG %, 2.5 rpg) role has increased over time for a very good Northeastern squad, and he's contributing valuable minutes. He should continue to see an increase in minutes.

Rookie-of-the-Year: Ryan Allen, Delaware

[Image: HAISTUCIEUDBRJN.20171204194354.jpg]

13th in the league in scoring in CAA-only games, and having taken home 3 ROW honors, Allen nips Matt Lewis for Rookie-of-the-Year honors for '17-18. The Blue Hens are depending on Allen immediately for their inexperienced squad, as he finds himself 3rd in the league in Minutes per game.

Coach of the Year: Bill Coen, Northeastern

[Image: ab01cf89075e44e9980d8b55550951e4-ab01cf8...51e4-0.jpg]

Picked to finish 6th by the league coaches, Northeastern currently sits in a tie for 2nd place at 8-4. And Coen is doing so with a young roster, with heavy minutes going to a trio of sophomore guards in Shawn Occeus, Bolden Brace and Donnell Gresham, and a freshman forward in Tomas Murphy. Pusica is also a new addition, as a transfer from San Diego.

Despite so much inexperience and moving parts, Coen has kept this team together as a unit and is turning in one of his finest coaching jobs this season. And that's saying something for the league's 2nd-longest tenured coach, who had posted four top-3 finishes, 2 NIT appearances and a CAA title entering the 2017-18 season.

Player of the Year: Justin Wright-Foreman, Hofstra

[Image: 1718Hofstra_WrightForemanV.JPG?width=300]

It's kind of boring to hand the POY to the league's top scorer, but in this case, it's deserved. No team in the league depends more on a player than 7-5 Hofstra has depended on Wright-Foreman, who averages 38.9 minutes per game in league play. And he has responded by filling up the stat sheet. Not only is he 1st in scoring, he's 6th in assists, tied for 7th in steals, 11th in 3-point shooting, and 9th in free throw shooting in CAA-only games.

Things could certainly change down the stretch, with Charleston's Joe Chealey likely being Wright-Foreman's top competition. But for now, this decision seems to me to be a no-brainer.

I didn't do Defensive Player of the Year, because I have no clue who wins it this time around. Jarrell Brantley? Nathan Knight? Someone else?

RE: CAA Postseason Awards: Who you got? - geewizNU - 02-08-2018 02:07 AM

Shawn Occeus has to be a top candidate for DPOTY.

RE: CAA Postseason Awards: Who you got? - 82hawk - 02-08-2018 05:18 AM

I do not see how Cacok ends up anywhere but first team. Everyone who watches the games realizes the dominance of Cacok. You have Nathan Knight on 1st team, yet he only averages two points more per game. Meanwhile Cacok averages 13.8 rpg to Knights 7.6 rpg, which is on par with Marcus Bryan. That's a no-brainer.

I agree that it is almost impossible that Cacok was never POW and Knight was twice, but the stats and eye test tell anyone that Cacok is a far better asset on the court than Knight at this point in their careers.

I know you're seeking a Tribe player for 1st team, so i'd switch and put Cohn on 1st team with Drexel's Isabell on 2nd. team.

RE: CAA Postseason Awards: Who you got? - SEA33HAWK - 02-08-2018 07:12 AM

How do you leave a player off first team that leads the nation in all rebounding categories and leads the CAA in double doubles?

RE: CAA Postseason Awards: Who you got? - tke75hawk - 02-08-2018 07:51 AM

I also do not see cacok on first team.several good big men in gas and performance against hofstra hurt him

I don't see Cacok on first team either. He's a monster on the boards this year, but he's #15 in the conference in scoring. He's not much of a factor in any other statistical categories measured for PoW or PoY awards.

I do think his record setting rebounds and double-doubles should have earned him a PoW or two, but I would agree with 2nd team honors for now and wouldn't put him as PoY either.

Cacok's efficiency is way down also. I didn't post the FG % rankings, but Cacok doesn't even show up in the Top 15 this year in CAA-only games. Knight (.592) ranks 4th in that category. Fornes (.514) is 11th, which is impressive for a guard.

Believe me, I'd love to see Cacok go beast mode, win a couple POW honors, and get into the 1st team. But these aren't picks for what I'd LIKE to see happen. These were picks based on what I think WILL happen.

Nathan Knight's presence on W&M's squad allows them to do a lot of things. They run a 4-guard lineup because they know they have him there for rebounding and rim protection. He's an essential piece for the system they run, and a huge reason why they're in a tie for 2nd place.

I would hate to see Cacok get snubbed. It was quite apparent that Cacok was better than Knight in the first game. Hopefully, the people who vote on it get it right.

Those awards are usually based on how well you fill out a stat sheet over the season and not situational matchups.

I can't imagine CaCock gets left off first team either.

I’d put money on it that he will be, if I were a gambling man.

I understand that, and I don't disagree that Knight will probably get it over Cacok. It would absolutely be the wrong pick though. Sure I am biased, but I can also step back and see why it is a joke that a player that leads the nation in rebounds and is 2nd in double/doubles doesn't make first team all conference. The only reason Knight averages 1 more point p/g is because he is a better free throw shooter. Cacok averages 6 more rebounds p/g, and has 10 more dbl/dbls. Nearly identical FG % and attempts. Knight's 2 blocks and 2 assists p/g have Cacok beat, but I just can't fathom how that outweighs Cacok's nation/conference leading stats. I guess I just have a different opinion of what filling out a stat sheet is.

RE: CAA Postseason Awards: Who you got? - SEA33HAWK - 02-08-2018 12:00 PM

Cacok averages a double double with much less minutes played than any of the others in contention. Thanks to the crosshairs that the officials have placed on him this year. That's a legitimate consensus among coaches. Don't understand why it's happening, except maybe he is being penalized for his strength.
Plus, is there another player in the CAA that leads the nation in anything? Not to mention 5 or 6 categories.

RE: CAA Postseason Awards: Who you got? - 82hawk - 02-08-2018 02:05 PM

I'd put money on Cacok 1st team.

RE: CAA Postseason Awards: Who you got? - TribePride91 - 02-08-2018 06:21 PM

You guys are forgetting the history of the voting. There is great inertia. Those that were on the preseason first team have a huge advantage. Also, it isn't a Cacok vs. Knight situation anyway, they do not vote for the 1st team center, it is merely 5 guys. It could be 5 guards. While I think team success should be a relevant factor, name recognition is as well. I think as long as Hofstra finishes in the top 4(and they almost certainly will), Wright-Foreman is going to be the player of the year. I think Chealey is a lock as well. As for the other 3 spots, if it were today, I think Pusica, Cacok, Knight, Cohn, Z. Martin, and Sebring are all viable candidates. Daly would have been a lock if he hadn't gotten hurt(again preseason honors and name recognition). Cacok likely will be on there because he was preseason 1st team and has had a good season.

Right now, let's go with Chealey, Wright-Foreman, Pusica, Cacok and Knight on the first team. But, how guys finish the next 6 games should matter.

BTW, the Tribe needs to win tonight or Charleston becomes the overwhelming favorite for both the regular season title and the tournament in 3 weeks.

Riller with 26 of Charleston's 37 in the first half!! Riller and FT's killing the Tribe so far.
