FYI for the uninformed, NCAA to move away from RPI - salukiblue - 01-20-2018 09:30 AM

The coming months could be a test run for a new tool that eventually replaces the RPI in the NCAA tournament selection committee's evaluation of potential at-large teams.

RPI is the traditional and polarizing barometer used in the analysis process leading into Selection Sunday. For the first time, committee members will see rankings from ESPN's BPI and Strength of Record, KPI, Jeff Sagarin Ratings and KenPom.com next to the RPI on the official team sheets used to assess each program....

I am pleased the Committee will place more emphasis on data rather than the subjective "eye test" which tends to favor established brands.

Do you really believe that these new ratings won't favor 'BCS' teams?

Didn’t they do this type of thing last year? I believe they used KenPom last year

The NCAA introduced those metrics to the committee last year and allowed for them (in writing) to consult other resources while still promoting the RPI.

In other words. The less advantaged conferences are getting too many teams in, so we need to find ways to make it even harder now.

I share your skepticism. However, I believe objective metrics are easier to evaluate for fairness. How many times have we seen a blind resume of two teams and the Selection Committee seeds higher or selects the less worthy team? I hope the numbers will reduce human bias (a probable vain hope I admit).

The RPI is dying now that lower teams have figured out ways to manipulate it to their advantage as the larger conferences have done for years.

This is just another method to justify leaving teams out...

I believe we were top 15 in Kenpom 1 year and got seeded as an 8 seed vs. another top 15 kenpom team in St. Louis.

The people in the room were aware of those numbers...They just didn't care.

Yep.

But, if anything, that is WHY Kenpom, not RPI, should be used. It wasn't really a "thing" back then and I was even mocked for referencing Sagarin or KenPom as better measuring sticks than RPI.

Don't take it to heart, just that it's not easy being right all the time and still having fools doubt me.

Don't sweat the fools. lol

But I apologize for doubting you.

I really did think we'd have less wins at this point.

We will see how much bias is in peoples minds when they rank Texas Tech and WSU...

Both lost 2 games this week to unranked teams

Both SMU and Houston are ranked higher than Texas and ISU in Kenpom

Article says it's a possibility, not a sure thing by the way. I'd say the fact that they are looking is a pretty good sign that RPI is going bye bye, but nothing certain yet.

Smoke and mirrors, each of these system have a Power conference bias. This way they can claim they are looking at data and still keep their Power conference bias in play. There may be one or two teams difference between these systems. Most are still top heavy with the power conferences teams.

Currently the RPI has more non power conference teams in their top 50 than KenPom. Since it is not likely for a team out side the top 50 to get an at large i this does not help non power conference teams much.

It is nice that we finally have proof that they have been using the RPI all this time, despite some posters insisting that they haven't been.

The fact the NCAA prioritized RPI for selection Sunday has never been disputed.

What was discussed, at one point, was for purposes of analysis of a team's true value, was RPI and reliable as KP or Sagarin?

Additionally, there was a later discussion the past couple years as to whether the selection committee used other metrics other than RPI.

Bottom line, it's good to see that RPI isn't solely relied upon anymore.
