Time for tie-ins in G5 Bowls to get an overhaul. - EigenEagle - 12-27-2017 06:09 PM

I'm pleased overall with how our bowl-eligible reps have repped the conference so far, but IMO our bowl record (now 7-3 since last year) shows we still have bowl tie-ins based on an outdated hierarchy of G5 teams.

Why does a 7-win CUSA team face Florida State and FIU faces one of the top AAC teams while one of our co-champs plays North Texas? There's no reason we shouldn't get as many Power 5 and AAC Bowl games as CUSA does. I believe since the 2014-2015 Bowl season we've played multiple teams from the Mountain West, CUSA, and MAC and none from the AAC or Power 5.

Meanwhile, the AAC might still be the gold standard of G5 leagues but they are 2-10 (LoL) against the mythical "G4" over the last 3 bowl seasons and they are crowing because their second-best team that was the preseason favorite for the Access Bowl squeaked by a 6-6 Big 12 team (oooooh none of us G4 peasants could beat that machine!).

No?

I believe that the wolves decimated UCF last year but of course that was because UCF just was not motived.

My bad. Don't know how I forgot that shellacking.

Every time I read about the SBC bowl season....I think, "thanks ark state, you ruined it." TV announcers love talking about "perfect something" lol....the conference could've gotten some free publicity

Crapping the bowl bed seems to be what they do best, and they do it on national TV.

Sunbelt Champ vs CUSA Champ in NO (MWC Champ vs MAC Champ in some bowl/ AAC subs for access bowl team if not AAC)
Sunbelt Runner-up vs Mac Runner-up in Mobile
Sunbelt #3 vs AAC #4 in Montgomery
Sunbelt #4 vs CUSA #4 in Orlando
Sunbelt #5 vs MWC #5 in Arizona

A P5 conference has to want to play a bowl against a Sunbelt team.
You guys have made some progress over the past 2 years and maybe there will be a bowl in the next cycle where your champ gets to play a #11 or #12 SEC/ACC team.
But the historical perception from the current bowl cycle (4 years ago) shows no P5 conference wants to play a SB team which has been perceived to the lowest FBS conference.

SB champ vs CUSA champ
AAC champ vs MWC champ
MAC champ plays the 5th place team in consideration for the national championship playoff. Because they are just that much better than the rest of us.

We're busy plotting the removal of certain coaches right now. We'll get back to your little ***** troll comments later.

yet the bowls where our conference actually makes money and gains notoriety...such as the Peach and Fiesta Bowls...we're 2-0 in (and going for 3-0 here soon)

it's all in your perspective as Tulsa beating up on CMU 55-10 doesn't impress anyone. UCF beating Baylor and Houston beating FSU...people take notice of that.

They do have back to back losses on national TV.......

This is why I believe we have to do better ooc and to end the year. Yes the bowls were pretty much already aligned and generally we do well but we get excluded big time. b Troy knocking off lsu raised some eyebrows. But we Gotta keep more of it going.

Come on Hemi agreeing with the fan of a school who never won more than 7 games in a year and finally won a bowl this year. Georgia State....Lol. Yep lost our bowl. Our 7th bowl in a row. Everyone that has ever been to 7 in a row raise your hand.. Ok..one team stAte. We are 3-4. Could have been better but we are always there. Where was Troy or GSU those 7 years hmmm. Ok that's what I thought. BTW I imagine we will still be playing in a bowl next year or we may need a new coach. Troy should be. That do have history. GSU...Not sure....never really been much. Lol...in5 or 6 years either one of Troy or GSU....do you think you will not have missed a bowl. We shall see. You have to be consistent....which Troy came close then fell. GSU...Lol....uh yeah.

If the current bowls tie-ins were redone 4 years ago, does anyone know if and when they're scheduled to be reshuffled again? I agree that it's a shame that Troy and FAU weren't matched up in a bowl game this year. Would have been a heck of a game that would have garnered more national interest than any of the bowl matchups that our conference's teams played in.

Some of the locations of the bowl games need to be revisited as well for the SBC.

Atlanta needs to host a game especially when you consider the most recent members App State, GS, CCU in close proximity. In addition, it would also increase exposure for schools like Ga State. Please make the game in the dome as well. No fans want to spend their holiday vacation on a cold field. I love regular season games out in the elements, but during the bowl season and late December these games should be played in warm weather conditions for the traveling fans.

RE: Time for tie-ins in G5 Bowls to get an overhaul. - Yosef Himself - 12-28-2017 07:29 AM

I was thinking about making a new thread for this, but this'll do.

What bowl tie-ins do the Belt have moving forward? Isn't there a rotation with Frisco/Bahamas? Do we lose Arizona and Cure? I think it makes little sense to have two bowl games with MAC opponents. DG Bowl is enough, as that's usually their champion. I like that AZB has a tie-in with the MWC, but those games usually don't move the needle for our conference now that Idaho and NMSU are gone. So I'd say lets see if we can trade AZB for a new bowl. Perhaps in ATL as stated before. Maybe Myrtle Beach. Maybe Chattanooga or Charlotte. This year we had a pretty decent switch with CUSA in Montgomery. I think that should be permanent.

If SBC continues with 5 bowl tie-ins (and maybe a rotating tie-in like Frisco/Bahamas for when the conference has more teams eligible) I'd like to see this are the opponents:

SBC vs CUSA - NOBowl
SBC vs CUSA - Camellia
SBC vs MAC - DG Bowl
SBC vs AAC - Cure
SBC vs #11/12 ACC/SEC - New bowl (Myrtle, ATL, Charlotte)

Rotating tie-in bowls:

SBC vs AAC - Frisco
SBC vs MAC/CUSA - Bahamas
SBC vs MWC - AZ Bowl

I disagree, Atlanta has too many distractions for a SBC bowl to be successful. Our bowl destinations are all fine but if one gets moved I think the expanded CCU stadium and Myrtle Beach would be the best spot to move it to.

Benson said in an interview last summer that the rotation idea had been dropped so we are not rotating bowls.

I think after our next expansion to ~21k seats, our stadium and location would be perfect for a bowl host site.

However, I don't see anyone in our conference wanting to play a bowl game in a conference foe's stadium.

I know I wouldn't want to go to a bowl game played at Georgia Southern or App. Not sure why you guys would feel any different about us.

It would have to be a bowl with no SBC tie in, which would mean no benefit to the conference. It would only benefit us (CCU) as a host site for a bowl game.
