Brett McMurphy bowl picks SUCK - UofToledoFans - 12-02-2017 01:12 AM

This guy did NO MAC research.

StAte vs. Akron in Montgomery
FIU vs. NIU in Boca
Wyoming vs. CMU in Boise
Toledo vs App in Mobile
OU vs. UAB in Bahamas but was already anounced.

HAS TT in Detroit.... Um can they pick over a secondary agreement?

No UB who beat likely CUSA Champ?

This would be the most vanilla slate ever.... No respect. Our tie ins blow tho.

A lot of Secondary agreements can be ignored with the right pressure from the TV networks. If ESPN wants Texas Tech in Detroit, ESPN will get Texas Tech in Detroit.

Not sure if that's what will happen, but it's not inconceivable.

Definitely the MAC could use more work on its bowl agreements.

The amount of bowls (5) is right but locations should be upgraded.

IDK, we'll see. McMurphy has pretty much been the gold standard in college football coverage this season.

RE: Brett McMurphy bowl picks SUCK - pono - 12-03-2017 03:16 PM

Things are starting to trickle in and already some surprises beginning with alabama beating out OSU for the playoff. utah st not headed to the idaho bowl, so MAC should see Colorado St or Wyoming there. Troy goes to New Orleans against N Texas so MAC won't play Troy. SEC short on bowl teams but with 2 in playoffs so some at-large spots open.

RE: Brett McMurphy bowl picks SUCK - chiefsfan - 12-03-2017 03:36 PM

AState vs Akron in Montgomery is confirmed.

I think we were headed there regardless how that last Troy drive went yesterday. But it's slightly more depressing now because it feels like a relegation game.

Toledo vs. App State is confirmed as well.

That was a great game last year, wouldn’t mind a rematch! Especially being a Mountaineer in SE Michigan.

Guess he was right about CMU: we're headed to Boise to play Wyoming.

Pretty upset NIU got rewarded with the QL bowl essentially when CMU would bring tons of fans and its a home game

So did the MAC end up with 5 teams and WMU and UB sit home?

Yep but it looks like something weird happened with the Camellia Bowl. That’s a MAC primary I believe but we didn’t use our slot? I was reading something on Twitter.

It looks like the MAC made a trade with CUSA.

Allowed CUSA to send MTSU to the Camellia Bowl. They are close by and can send a lot of fans. In exchange the MAC sent Akron to Boca Raton.

Does this move foreshadow the MAC pulling out of the Camellia Bowl once the contract is up? It could very well be.

WMU from the Cotton to no bowl in one year.

I'd love to see the G5 try to organize a "Bowl Series" around higher level bowls to play a P5 team.

Holiday-New stadium is to seat only 35,000.
Sun-Smaller market and 51,500 capacity.
Liberty-Capacity of 58,207.
Independence-Tiny market and 50,500 seat stadium.

Place the G5 champions that do not earn an access bowl in one of these games vs. P5 competition. Especially now with the G5 all having championship games. It would add more interest to the conference championship games if a bigger bowl was always on the line.

For the MAC since they don't share a geographical footprint with the bowls would probably get stuck in the Sun most of the time. Sun against a PAC or B12 #3/#4 I'd gladly take over the SBC #2/#3 in Mobile.

Why would the P5 even consider this? Their fan bases consider it a disappointment to have to play G5 teams in a bowl, much like G5 teams would also rather play P5 teams, too. Note how many G5 vs. G5 bowls there are and how the 7-5 & 8-4 P5 teams get paired up. They would howl like stuck pigs if they were matched with G5 teams when P5 teams are available.

Because ratings of these P5 vs. P5 matches with 7-5 teams and coaching without their head coach are not very good. Attendance isn't very good either.

Holiday, Sun, Liberty, Independence aren't in NFL stadiums with the NFL amenities that is why they constantly slide down the pecking order of bowls, from major bowls to average P5 games. Put those games into a 40-50 million dollar TV contract playing G5 champs and they could make more money.

In fact such an idea has been discussed in the past instead of an access bowl but the non-BCS/G5 have been adamant about New Year's bowl access. They have an autobid to the NY6 now but could use a secondary place for their champions.

RE: Brett McMurphy bowl picks SUCK - Kittonhead - 12-03-2017 07:51 PM

Here is who is playing in these games this year:

Holiday (Michigan St. 9-3 vs. Washington St. 9-3)
Sun (Arizona St. 7-5 vs. North Carolina St. 8-4)
Liberty (Memphis 10-2 vs. Iowa St. 7-5)
Independence (Florida St. 6-6 vs. Southern Miss 8-4)

Holiday Bowl as we can see has a nice P5 matchup with two 9-3 teams. Its played in an NFL stadium a big time venue.

However city of San Diego is tearing the NFL stadium down. It will be replaced by a 35,000 seat on campus stadium for SDSU. Clearly it won't be P5 bowl material in the future.

If instead something were done with these games whereby they were considered as a second tier NY4 to go along with the NY6 they could be possibly more interesting.

Holiday (Michigan St. 9-3 vs. Boise St. 10-3)
Sun (Washington St. 9-3 vs. Florida Atlantic 10-3)
Liberty (Toledo 10-2 vs. Iowa St. 7-5)
Independence (North Carolina St 8-4 vs. Troy 10-2)

These games could still play matchmaker on who sells the most tickets which obviously puts the MAC last in line but included they could still be.

The 3 current bowls with the P5 v P5 listed here are more attractive bowls by far to the mass generic sports fans than the ones you suggest. The Liberty Bowl this year is already P v G.

I just don’t see how they would get better ratings than the current matchups. Ratings are king. Attendance is only secondary. Attendance is down for most of the minor bowls no matter the opponents.
