USM ISN'T GIVING AWAY FREE TICKETS ANYMORE... - SethManKA1 - 11-13-2017 10:43 AM

There has been discussion about why USM's attendance has been lower this year. An article was published in the Hattiesburg American newspaper recently about that. It said the reason attendance has been lower is because new AD Gilbert said that the giving away of so many free tickets is ending. He wants people to start buying tickets. I don’t know how you figure this but he said that revenue is doing some better from this decision. But overall the lower attendance is mainly a result of not alloting free tickets to local businesses.

Western might have a attendance problem but you will not find a free ticket anywhere in town unless someone has a extra they are giving away.

Speaking of "attendance" this is one reason schools with large stadiums they can't fill average what they do. Marshall is about the only CUSA school with a stadium over 30k+ that doesn't give away blocks of free tickets. I believe sell a cheaper ticket for families but not huge discounted tickets or blocks of freebies.

At Western it will cost you $25 to walk up and buy a ticket...sometime a $5 discount on late season games. But no free tickets or dollar tickets.

It's also what Dollars made off tickets sold don;t line up with attendance figures.

I know people like to think if you get them there...they will buy a ticket at some point. All of use have a cord of fans we can depend on to buy a ticket and even those fans don'y always show up. But they bought tickets. We have the fringe group of season ticket holders and then walkups that know they will be able to get a ticket at the gate. So they don't invest in season tickets and the donation.

Then you have those that only show up when they can get in at a huge discount...unless there comes a time when you sellout that 38,000 seat stadium game in game out. Those people will only come if they get a discounted ticket. It's why they came in the first place and nothing will change that.

By giving away tickets or having Dollar tickets or even $5 tickets I think it devalues your season tickets. At some point those fringe season ticket holders are going to see how much money they are losing by paying full price plus a donation. The core wont care...as long as you are winning

UAB doesn't give away free tickets. Someone has paid for every ticket (e.g., the City of Birmingham buys a block of tickets to give to employees/families). Do you think our admin has had any interest in inflating our attendance numbers to look better?

Yes, while the Kentucky game had a very disappointing 22k people, it was apparently the second highest revenue game since 2008. That says a lot about how previous administrations just gave away tickets.

RE: USM ISN'T GIVING AWAY FREE TICKETS ANYMORE... - ThreeifbyLightning - 11-13-2017 12:04 PM

There is a delicate balance between undervaluing not only season tickets but season ticket holders and filling seats.

The problem with sports tickets is the team generally doesn't follow the laws of supply and demand. Season tickets going down. Raise prices (to keep revenue the same).

The problem for almost every one of us is that we take a season by season approach to attendance and sacrifice butts for revenue rather than taking a long term strategic approach to season ticket sales. It stands to reason that if ticket sales and season ticket sales are declining then maybe they are priced too high.

We have the same problem at MT. Season ticket sales have been declining but revenue has remained the same. Simple to figure that our right. The AD is raising prices. IMO, he is contributing to the declining numbers. Next year will be even worse unless they slash the tickets. We also do a poor job of outreach or sales. If I stopped buying season tickets right now no one would call me. We just keep doing the same things hoping for a different result. Very frustrating.

Sometimes I wish our stadium was smaller to create more of a demand, but then when you host a P5 and have a sell out its totally worth it.

RE: USM ISN'T GIVING AWAY FREE TICKETS ANYMORE... - usm99 - 11-13-2017 12:34 PM

I know quite a few people at USM who wouldn't buy season tickets for the simple fact they knew they could get cheap/free tickets if they waited until gameday. I realize part of being a "true fan" is buying season tickets and donating to the Eagle Club (or whatever each school calls theirs) but the reasoning for these particular people were "why pay $150 (avg of $25 a game for a 6 game home season) for a season ticket when i can just wait the week of the game a get a ticket for $5-$10 with whatever promotion that is going on that week". I've bought season tickets and still do but it always got me how they would run the promotions on a weekly/game basis as I felt it was a slap in the face to those who paid the full price. I can see 1 or 2 times but to do it 4 times or more kills any support to buy season tickets for many fans.

Attendance is down at most schools. Don't know why, but it's not just USM.

Being able to sit in your home and watch just about any game you want on a large screen, clear, TV.

Cost to attend...a father and son is going to spend north of $75 if they get a coke and popcorn.

It's that way with all sports unless you are a blueblood school or getting blueblood schools for home games..the fringe is not buying in so you are basically left with the core and students. Some programs just have a larger core

USM could do what FSU and Missouri have done: decrease stadium capacity, but increase club seating. Club seating would be reserved for season ticket holders like you (think like press box style seating with tvs, a huge window to view the game from, and more high-end stadium food), while regular, average joes, like me(I don't have $$'s to buy season tickets, would get the regular cheap seats with regular stadium food.

Club seating was added to the Rock back at the time the end zone structure was under construction and was sandwiched between the upper and lower decks on East side. No practical additional space available elsewhere, pressboxes occupy the identical space on West side.

But they have plenty of people who would love to just go see a game. We don't have that problem. Most people going to a game are season ticket holders

Can the press boxes on the west side be relocated??

The only space available would be adding new ones atop the upper deck, either side, but that might not be satisfactory due to height.

Correct. All of UAB tickets were purchased by someone. Same as in 2014 and several years before that. Stop listening to ignorant Gumps.
