Indeed. Both defenses played well but VaTech got the win with a slightly better offense. What is epic about this game is yet to play out. Texas was leveled by Maryland. Baylor crucified by Liberty, West Virginia now has a blemish against a school not likely to finish in the top 10, and Oklahoma travels to Columbus to face the Buckeyes next week. Should Oklahoma lose to the Ohio State it's going to be very difficult for a 1 loss team from the Big 12 to make the CFP. Why? SOS wins. They will either have horrible losses, or a horrible record against the other P5. T.C.U. has an upcoming shot at Arkansas, but what T.C.U. and O.S.U. will now face is the absolute need to remain perfect and that simply doesn't happen in their round robin and now that they have the best two finishers playing in a CCG there's an extra loss to be passed around and an extra game to play. If Arkansas beats T.C.U. I can see no path for a 1 loss Big 12 school to get into the CFP unless 2 of the other conferences have 2 loss champions.

Yep. That said, ACC teams better win a few more P5 OOC games too (just to be sure)

Great game, passion on the field and in the stands.
Audition?

Mark, the ACC has a safety net. Florida is still weak, and Clemson is still stronger than So. Carolina. You get the end of the season rivalry games to help make up distance. And Va Tech just got their OOC P win. The Big 12 has nothing after the first three games but conference play. In other words no chance to boost their OOC after week 3, and the rest of the season to have to live with first impressions.

Nice win Hokies. 04-cheers

Congrats to VT. Seems like a game that should be played more often.

And Florida State now needs to find a new QB. That's the downside of those great (for the fans) early season OOC games. Bama got hurt, too.

RE: Congrats VT - Hallcity - 09-04-2017 12:08 PM

I was really impressed by the turnout. It put NCSU and South Carolina to shame. It's that passion that makes college sports special.

Congrats VT - jtwvu87 - 09-05-2017 09:23 AM

Congrats 2 the Va Tech Hokies..yall have a really good team & what appears 2 be a great QB. I dont mine good losses & wvu lost to a very good Va Tech team..I hope yall win the rest of your games as do I hope my mountaineers the same. IMHO, I think the WVU vs Va Tech was the best competitive game played on tv...Crowd was awesome..looked good on TV

RE: Congrats VT - ken d - 09-05-2017 09:47 AM

Between now and 2025, West Virginia will play at least one ACC opponent every year, and two in 2022 (Va Tech and Pitt).

I hope the ACC will eventually get over its animosity and/or disrespect toward the Mountaineers, and will put them at the top of their potential expansion list. They are, IMO, the best available candidate who would actually consider making a switch.

They would be the rug that tied the room together to quote another Dude. Last year WVU made the NCAA baseball tournament (check), they bridge the geographical void that the Maryland departure created (check), they have natural rivalries with Pitt and Va Tech and old ties to Miami and Syracuse (check), they play good and sometimes very good to great basketball (check), and they would be acceptable to the football first schools (check).

But as usual they would have to overcome the thinking of the Tobacco Road mafia. So we'll see.

Besides Maryland and Penn State, WV would be the most natural all sport pickup that the ACC could get. I was upset with WV the way they left the BE. And then the way the classless loudmouth Luck would spout off. But now he's gone and I'm over the whole BE thing, now that SU is solidly in the ACC. I would love to see WV in the ACC.

Carolina did place West Virginia's name in nomination for membership in the ACC (1954 I think).

Some folks just make things up about "tobacco road" just because it fits their overall narrative.

I've said numerous times on the board that I'd be receptive to adding WVU to the ACC. However, older VT fans who remember how bad things got between the two fanbases want nothing to do with them.

The part that becomes trickier is slotting WVU into the division alignment. Personally, I think it makes the most sense to slide them into the Coastal where you'd have annual matchups of the Backyard Brawl & Black Diamond Trophy. But given the sheer numbers of conference members at that point, what do you do for cross division matchups? Syracuse probably wants to play WVU & Pitt every year, which wouldn't happen with the current scheduling ethos.

What's even trickier is scheduling with 15 teams. You would have to have a rule change to allow 3 divisions of 5 teams each.

Instead, you would need to add a 16th member, like Cincinnati. Then, you could divide them geographically, with everyone south of Virginia in one division. That, of course, would make the Cavaliers very unhappy campers. But at this point, somebody has to be unhappy.

So true. Even a fledgling rivalry with Louisville as well. The Eers just make so much sense, one knows it isn't going to happen. 03-banghead
