CB McGrath podcast interview with Jon Evans - 70shawk - 08-29-2017 06:25 AM

C.B. McGrath: A winner as a player and assistant coach, his challenge is to keep the basketball momentum going at UNCW

Link to Jon Evans story about the podcast

Excerpt:

McGrath applied twice when the basketball job opened, and came up short. But when Kevin Keatts left UNCW for North Carolina State in March of this year, McGrath’s third time was the charm. He interviewed the day before the Tar Heels left for the Final Four in Phoenix. He tells the story at 33:05 of the podcast.

“Coach (Williams) had tried to call Jimmy (Bass, UNCW Athletic Director) after I interviewed,” McGrath says. “I tried to call him. I thanked him. A day later Coach asked ‘have you heard from Jimmy?’ I said “I haven’t heard from him Coach’. He said ‘well, that’s not good’. I said, ‘I agree, so it’s over’. I didn’t think about it anymore. I was going to wait for the announcement of who they were going to hire.”

They hired C.B. McGrath, who still had work to do with the Tar Heels in the Final Four. As word started to leak out, McGrath and Williams decided they had to tell the team. McGrath talks about that decision on the podcast, too, and the emotional moment he shared with Williams when he told his mentor that UNCW had offered him the job.

Good listen. You get to hear/see more into his journey a bit. The thing i like most is he does sound like a guy that wants to be here for a while.

It's long, but it's probably the best interview I have heard of him. Some real nuggets in there.

I'm not sure how much stock I'd put into a statement like that, but I believe he'll be more selective than Keatts, or Wainwright for that matter, with future opportunities. What gives me the most optimism about this hire is the staff that he put together.

Yeah i get that. Just seems more sincere than the same message we have gotten in the past from others. Just a read. Agree about what appears to be a pretty solid staff.

If this was his third attempt at the job here, I assume that the two other times were the peterson & keatts hirings. Should that reasoning be correct, I cannot help but wonder how different things might have played out had C.B. been hired rather than peterson?

I don't think anyone could have been successful under depallo and her AD

McGrath had multiple opportunities elsewhere and turned them down. He was looking for a place he could raise his family and a place they wanted to live. He stated that UNCW was his "dream" job, and that he loved the atmosphere of Trask.

Of every coach we've had, he is the one I feel most confident will stay with success. He also stated he would not want the pressure of a job like UNC. Don't forget, he's been happy earning 250k or less his whole career. I don't think he's driven by money or fame.

Here's to hoping fame hits him up anyways, seeing as that would benefit us. I'm looking forward to his success as I'm sure we all are. It is absolutely nice hearing the story of a guy that was turned down twice and still wanted the job enough to put in for it again. That's solid perseverance, will to succeed, and a desire to be here. Looking forward to his tenure here! I think we hired the right person, for sure.

The prototypical "dream" scenario is to hire the next Mark Few, who achieves success and then wants to make his own "Gonzaga" in Wilmington.

Time will tell, and I hope you are right. We should have all learned from the past that what looks decent off the court doesn't necessarily lead to W's on the court.

Honestly, because of the high success volume over the last few years, I'm anticipating at least a small step back but steady, upward progression from there.

Given what we lost, and where we were i think it is unreasonable to not expect at least a slight regression. Just hope it's not too far.
