Who has the most difficult OOC Schedule? - ODU AGGIE - 08-06-2017 11:43 AM

I got to wondering which conference team has the hardest OOC schedule this year, and this is what I came up with for the East.

Based on the ESPN Power Index, I awarded points to each of the opponents in the inverse order of their power index ranking, i.e., the number 130 ranked team received one point, the 129 ranked team received two points, and so forth. (http://www.espn.com/college-football/statistics/teamratings) I awarded all FCS opponents zero points.

I used the total opponents' points for each team to place them in rank order, with the team garnering the most points being ranked first with the hardest schedule, down to the team garnering the least points being ranked seventh with the easiest schedule. This is how it turned out.

1. Middle Tennessee (251 points) – Vanderbilt, Minnesota, Syracuse, Bowling Green
2. Marshall (239 points) – Miami (Ohio), NC State, Kent State, Cincinnati
3. Old Dominion (222 points) – Albany, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, UMass
4. Florida International (194 points) – Alcorn State, Central Florida, Indiana, Tulane
5. Florida Atlantic (183 points) – Bethune-Cookman, Navy, Wisconsin, Buffalo
6. Western Kentucky (157 points) – Eastern Kentucky, Ball State, Illinois, Vanderbilt
7. Charlotte (140 points) – NC A&T, Eastern Michigan, Kansas State, Georgia State

The results look reasonable to me. Somewhat fittingly, MTSU has the toughest schedule. I was a little surprised to find that Marshall has the second hardest schedule. Charlotte having the easiest schedule seems appropriate, but I was really surprised to find that WKU is playing the sixth hardest schedule in the East.

I was going to do the full conference, but doing the East took a little more time than I intended. So -- I will do the West a little later.

Cheers!

Is home vs away taken into account?

RE: Who has the most difficult OOC Schedule? - Ole Blue - 08-06-2017 12:54 PM

A team each from SEC, ACC, and Big 10... yep, it's gonna be tough!

No -- for two reasons, I suppose. One, not sure how I would have quantified that. Two, I didn't even think about it.

Easy OOC schedule most are winnable, only really solid program is Wisconsin. Kansas State and Virginia Tech have had good programs also but have fallen off lately.

A bit of a reprieve for WKU this year. In the last 7 years we've played Alabama twice, LSU, Nebraska, Tennessee. This will be an unusual year. Hope we don't embarrass ourselves with an easier schedule.

Weak P5 teams, that's a perfect P5 schedule

Ok, here's the West and the consolidated conference rankings. As we all knew they would, Rice leads the West (and the conference), and it's not even close. UTSA comes in at number two in the West, and as we anticipated and as is appropriate, UAB has the least difficult schedule in the West. A little surprisingly, Charlotte has the overall easiest OOC schedule, with UAB sliding in just ahead of them and tied with WKU. I will repeat the East rankings here just so you can see everything all together.

1. Middle Tennessee (251 points) – Vanderbilt, Minnesota, Syracuse, Bowling Green
2. Marshall (239 points) – Miami (Ohio), NC State, Kent State, Cincinnati

6. Western Kentucky (157 points) – Eastern Kentucky, Ball State, Illinois, Vanderbilt
7. Charlotte (140 points) – NC A&T, Eastern Michigan, Kansas State, Georgia State

1. Rice (345 points) – Stanford, Houston, Pitt, Army
2. UTEP (276 points) - Oklahoma, Arizona, New Mexico State, Army
3. Southern Miss (216 points) – Southern, Kentucky, LA-Monroe, Tennessee
4. LA Tech (211 points) – Northwestern State, South Alabama, Mississippi State, South Carolina
5. North Texas (201 points) – SMU, Lamar, Iowa, Army
6. UTSA (179 points) – Southern, Texas State, Baylor, Houston

RE: Who has the most difficult OOC Schedule? - Fort Bend Owl - 08-06-2017 05:52 PM

I really hadn't paid much attention to OOC schedules for everyone else, but I've got to say, there are a lot of shockingly easy schedules. Only the top 4 teams on the list play 4 FBS teams with everyone else playing 1 FCS team? I mean this is a touch non-conference schedule for Rice, but it's nowhere near as tough as they've had in years past I'd say.

RE: Who has the most difficult OOC Schedule? - BlueraiderJT - 08-07-2017 08:49 AM

We should have the toughest OOC schedule for the next 2 years after this season too.

2018 - @Vandy, @Georgia and @Kentucky

2019 - @Iowa, @Michigan and Duke at home

We'll be playing 3 P5's per year for the foreseeable future and I'm very happy about it.

Wow, thanks for the research and post. Good information and I think it is right on the money for what this years teams appear to be for 2017. I hope everyone in the conference will shock the rest of the football world and we have some major upsets and win those marquee games that will move the conference perception even further forward in a positive light.

I would love for ODU to have two big upsets this year or at least accomplish another first for our young program. A POWER FIVE CONFERENCE win .......Go Monarchs

I'm excited because I thing UAB has a decent shot at 3-1... That would be awesome!

RE: Who has the most difficult OOC Schedule? - Volkmar - 08-07-2017 11:17 AM

I'm glad UTSA is on the lower end of the spectrum for a change this season. We've faced gauntlets in recent years...

2016
Colorado State
Arizona State
Texas A&M
Alabama St.

2015
Arizona
Kansas State
Oklahoma State
Colorado State

2014
Houston
Arizona
Oklahoma State
New Mexico

2013
Oklahoma State
Arizona
Houston
New Mexico

We'll have another tough one in 2018 though...
Arizona State
Baylor
Kansas State
Texas State

Next year you guys should be playing Oklahoma State instead of Baylor. Then you could win a "State" championship!

I'm glad two Western schools decided to soften themselves up before we get to them. 05-stirthepot

I like some of the middle of the pack schedules with soft P5 competition. Games should be competitive without as much wear and tear on the teams.

RE: Who has the most difficult OOC Schedule? - TribeNiner - 08-07-2017 02:45 PM

Charlotte's future schedules from what I can find (someone feel free to correct me if there have been changes):

2018:
Fordham
Appy St
@UMass
@Tennessee

2019:
Gardner Webb
@Appy St
UMass
@Clemson

2020:
@Tennessee
Norfolk St
@Duke
Georgia State

2021:
Duke
@Georgia State
@Illinois

2022:
Maryland
@Georgia State
@Indiana

2023:
@Maryland
Georgia State
@Indiana

2024:
@UNC-CHeat

2025:
UNC-CHeat

Not sure about the FCS hate given one win over FCS counts toward bowl eligibility (and just ask Virginia how it felt to have Richmond put their backups in last year); but, your method, your rules. For those seasons where we have a full slate (using this year's points), we still have an FCS game each year, so we'd be at 189 (2018), 202 (2019), and 198 (2020). The methodology seems deceiving considering we're playing Tennessee twice, Duke, and Clemson in that three year span.
