When the lights come down at Rynearson - masttg - 07-17-2017 05:40 PM

Old light towers coming down. New pedestals being poured.

Excellent.

I knew that Heather wanted an upgrade.

I was able to confirm last fall that EMU rented lights for night games (saw them at the CMU game and Heather confirmed).

Question:

Light standards on both sides? Yes?

RE: When the lights come down at Rynearson - masttg - 07-17-2017 06:24 PM

All the current work is on the east side.

Dear Friends,
Is this part of the overall remodel plan, or something that was already in the works? The original lights were put up by the Detroit Wheels pro football team in 1974. I think it was part or all of the lease deal for the Wheels use of Rynearson Stadium.

Holy scrap steel.

I think this is independent of the building project that is what I think I remember being told.

IF memory serves me correctly, I had heard from inside the convo say two years ago, that the cost of new lights was, I believe, around 1.5M. Considered part of typical capital maintenance expense.

What I don't know is if the west stand lights also need to be replaced OR if the east stand lights + existing west stand lights will be sufficient.

As I indicated above, EMU had to rent temporary lights for night games. I saw them before last year's CMU game and asked if that was rental lights and told yes (like I was 99% sure).

RE: When the lights come down at Rynearson - Ken Barna - 07-18-2017 12:44 PM

Dear steve,
You are correct about the rental, but my question is, were any night games at Eastern televised in the last twenty years? The reason I'm asking is, if the old lights were good enough then, why do we need new lights now? I know todays lights are better quality, and last longer, and it is probably a need to change over to new.
You also ask a good question about both sides being replaced.

TV. ESPN to be exact.

As the quality of telecasts goes up (e.g., HD), the lighting requirements increase.

Does this mean EMU will have more night games? It always seems like night games have better attendance. Maybe it's because more of the night games are early in the season before the wheels fall off but 6 or 7 p.m. starts are ideal to me.

Yes.

We have at least 3 games under the lights this season out of 5 home games.

Charlotte is a Friday night game and we have two mid-week November games.

East side lights coming down.

RE: When the lights come down at Rynearson - emu79 - 07-20-2017 04:04 AM

I think the cost of new lights would be about 2.5-3 million. So where is this money coming from again?

Too high.

Think I was told 1.5 - 2M by someone in EMU athletics.

Before the building project, I think a new scoreboard would have been 1.5M (also).

And lights aren't coming from private donations correct? But out of a budgeted capital improvement fund?

I believe that is what I was told. It is considered a maintenance item just like repaving parking lots, HVAC or any other asset which needs maintenance or replacement.

So we get around to doing this year and it was never done since the Wheels put in the lights in 1974? That's one hell of a depreciation schedule.

Yep, I remember the 90s when EMU athletics had a hard time paying the bills.

I do agree that this should have been done say 10 years ago when TV became more of a consideration.

I liked the old structures from a view point as it gave the stadium and old timely feel but I understand it is time for new.

Might not be the best timing if in just a few years they will tear out the new for the renovations.

??? Why???

The East side lighting has nothing to do with the new football building, etc.

BTW, what is the status of those lights? New poles up? Lights?
