Eleven Warriors article: Kerry Coombs is Ohio State's Man in Cincinnati - crex043 - 05-24-2017 09:35 PM

Good read from Eleven Warriors regarding Kerry Coombs' recruiting success in Cincinnati (and nationally). Energy, accessibility, familiarity, and a track record of development for his position players. There are some quotes from local coaches, including John Rodenberg at Moeller who never hesitated to push his kids towards OSU even during Jones and Kelly's tenure.

I don't post this as a Coombs fan. I post this because this is what we go up against when we recruit against OSU in Cincinnati. Surely, Fickell is aware of this but it is a tall cliff to scale.

Also, my favorite comment:

Buckeyepastor 9 HOURS AGO

Coombs is so great at sealing the deal.  He could sell fridges to eskimos and bibles to atheists.

It is sad, though, that we needed an assistant to nail down Cincinnati.  Always been the dysfunctional child of the state.

Over the years some of our posters have commented that UC fans have "little brother syndrome" because we constantly bring up and bash OSU. Looking at the comments in the various Eleven Warrior articles it sounds like OSU fans are no different.

It's interesting as that is a very cocky group, but they clearly have respect for LF. Not many admit he can go toe to toe with Osu, but some definitely on the fence.

Rightfully so in football,,I'm hoping we begin to be competitive in the AAC..We can't
carry the refreshments compared to tosu.

Basketball,,Fad, get out your schedule and put an L on your ledger. Louisville/KY, NC/Duke, Iowa/Iowa St etc do it..What benefit do u get with Youngstown St, Marshall,
Jackson St. We get a two for 1 until you show you can be competitive.

I'm really surprised to see how much the commenters rave about Coombs' coaching ability. When he was here, the DBs were the weakest part of the team throughout his whole tenure. He was such a bad DBs coach that he got demoted to just cornerbacks.

Helluva recruiter though.

Should he get credit for the CBs that OSU has sent to the NFL?

Maybe he learned from his mistakes and became a good db coach. Maybe he has better talent to coach (maybe is sarcasm).
When he left here, people said "he wasn't a good coach anyway". Shouldn't we be happy regardless of what the commenters on an OSU board say? I have fond memories of the teams that KC was a coach on and I am not an expert on how well a coach coaches (except Tuberville - he sucked).

He is a good coach. IMO people around here either disliked him because they didn't like Colerain High School or were butthurt when he left to go to Columbus.

I'd have driven to Columbus to bring him here as CLF's DB coach and assistant HC. That would have been a powerful combination around this town.

He was relatively new at UC to coaching college football. I did have some issues with the regression of the secondary while he was here (though part of that was undoubtedly the secondary he inherited was pretty special). I don't think it was clear he got the most out of that group. It is clear, however, that players love playing for him and that he is very good on the recruiting trail. Honestly, if the issues that many of us saw were real, it's possible he's improved in those areas with more college position coach experience. I don't follow OSU close enough to speak intelligently about that.

Dysfunctional child? Really? I guess that means we don't drink the Cowtown Koolaide.

If North Korea launches an ICBM I sure hope it gets intercepted unless it's target is Cowlumbus.

Yes, pretty laughable isn't it when one looks at the long and ever growing list of top tens that regularly include Cincinnati. If the "State of Cincinnati" seceded, along with the Cleveland metro, Ohio would look and feel more like Iowa to most objective, outside observers.

i kinda like the distinction

Hey now... OSU sucks, but Columbus is a pretty awesome city to live in. I love Cincinnati too though, and I especially love that most people from Cincinnati don't just automatically root for OSU. Arrogant OSU fans don't seem to understand that.

So is Des Moines, or so I hear. It's not a bad thing to be like Iowa - it's a lot nicer than the hipster douchelands on the East Coast or the fairy dreamlands on the West Coast.

All true. The only knock on him was that the position he coached was consistently the team's biggest weakness. After 5 years, that's no longer the players' fault; that's the position coach's fault.

But it's possible that he got better as a position coach.

I know some OSU fans who would have done that 2 or 3 years ago too. He had a bad run for a few years... Don't know if it s his coaching or their records but they went backwards when he first got there.
