Thoughts on this idea? - Reggie Favre - 04-23-2017 07:09 PM

First, this is not intended to offend any other teams in CUSA. As a USM fan, its a matter of increasing revenue and more interest in football overall.

CUSA is so spread out, USM doesn't have a lot of natural rivals. The ones we began to develop over the years in CUSA all left for the most part (Memphis, ECU, Houston, Louisville, TCU, etc.). This contributes to lower attendance figures. Many current CUSA schools prob feel the same way regarding football attendance / regional competition in CUSA.

Therefore, would you support the idea of cutting the CUSA schedule down from 8 to 6 per year? Certainly, its more important that the ADs / Presidents / Institutions support the idea, but I'm interested in thoughts of the fan-bases. The Conference itself may hate it, but if its members vote to do it, then I'd imagine it could be done.

The schools could replace those 2 games with more regional / historical opponents that may generate more fan interest. This would theoretically increase revenue in home ticket sales and save on travel costs for the away game(s). Could also schedule a "money" game(s) for the away game (vs. SEC, ACC, Big 12, etc) to increase revenue and possibly still save on travel costs.

Thoughts?

In favor. Conference games should be kept to a minimum.

My suggestion is you play the other 6 in your division and that's it. Obviously the div. winners meet in the conf. champ game

On account of the fact we have no one locally that we have any interest in playing (other than Tulane, who is #Scared), that's gonna be a no for me. Let's not make ourselves bush league.

Kind of puts everybody on the cusp of going independent.

sounds ok but how do you plan on getting more P5 games? most aren't coming to G5s

Little late for that. how much more bush league could CUSA get? The conference tv contract deals out a whopping $200k per team and if you're lucky, you may be able to stream a game or two online. But i digress.

We could merge with the SBC like some want us to do.

The only way we improve our current situation is by #Winning.

You dont necessarily have to get P5s for your home game replacement. You could go there and get paid to do so if possible. For the home game replacement, you could get a more regional / historical opponent from the G5. Not knocking Florida International, but im sure Louisiana-Lafayette would bring more fans to our stadium (more ULL AND USM fans), for instance. We have history and its a couple hours away.

RE: Thoughts on this idea? - Lizard Breath - 04-23-2017 07:52 PM

We're (UTSA) already playing local teams for our OOC. We have Baylor, Houston & Texas State in our first 4 games next year.. Last year OK State , Texas A&M & Arizona St. We have signed up to play Texas A&M , Baylor & Texas St. till 2020. So if we just played our Western conference we would essentially stay in Texas 90% of the season. Which in order to get more exposure we want to travel & play other teams. I see what you're saying but I think we are trying to grow as fast as possible & the limited travel wouldn't be good. That's just my opinion.

No.

North Texas plays 8 of its 12 games in Texas next season. I see no reason to reduce our conference schedule. Things are fine as they are.

I kind of like it... give each team the option for 6,7, or 8. If you need a crossover or two we make it happen and it's a conference game. Make division games determine standings and work the crossovers into the tiebreaker or something.

I'm curious what the ADs would say, my hunch is they like 8 games

RE: Thoughts on this idea? - Nugget49er - 04-23-2017 09:21 PM

Perhaps I am overlooking something, but unless other conferences do the same aren't we going to end up with more available slots and no available opponents?

RE: Thoughts on this idea? - Ourland - 04-23-2017 09:25 PM

That's my thought as well. How do you fill open slots late in the schedule without an alliance with another conference? But the concept is a good one. An Arkansas State fan mentioned it on the "Minimum" thread a couple days ago. It solves the problem without merging or realigning.

so you (North Tx) and Lizard Breath (UTSA) are happy with your schedule and you both mention how you are already playing local / regional teams. that kind of makes the point. we (USM) would also like more regional games. freeing up a couple games would help USM (and other schools not in texas) do that. also, you would still have the freedom to play games your fans would be interested in. they dont HAVE to be from TX. do your fan bases really love the thought of playing FL Atlantic or Charlotte? prob no more than we like to play them, or North Texas.

also, your attendances arent very good at all. perhaps this would help. this will sound insulting, but...considering UTSA football has only been around for 6 years or so, i can see how UTSA would be happy playing anyone. UTSA has NO traditional / historical rivalries. Regarding North Texas, considering their history, I can understand them being happy with the CUSA schedule. nevertheless, im sure there are other teams you may find more appealing to play than the CUSA teams.

LA Tech has Miss St coming in 2017 and Baylor coming in 2019(?). And we can usually schedule a P5 (e.g., TX A&M) in Shreveport as part of a multi game package deal.

Frankly, I really like where LA Tech is with football scheduling right now. Tech has 7 HOME games in 2017, including hosting Miss St, USA, USM, UNT, UTSA and a local FCS (NSU) that will likely draw 28K. No complaints here.

you couldnt do this overnight. but i think it could be done. just think of all the FCS schools on FBS schedules. Id imagine it could be worked out. schedules are worked out years in advance. it may not be easy, but i think its worth consideration. i def think it is more feasible, realistic and BENEFICIAL than the merging and realignment options / discussions.

Our attendance is better than most in this conference. We've had a few bad years so next few years we should see our attendance up closer to 28-30k. We aren't looking to play anyone, that's why we scheduled Texas St,Houston, Texas AM, Baylor. We are locked up for the next 5 years. Why wouldn't you guys do the same? Get the teams you want to see and play them during your OOC? That's what it's for. Are you playing a ****** OOC schedule? I forsee us playing Texas St & Houston for a long time.

So we are already set. I suggest you guys do the same.

If Southern Miss wants to schedule more regional teams, no one is stopping them. You have 4 OOC games to schedule more regional opponents.

The Florida schools have not done much, but they are making needed changes. I have hope that they will become assets in the east. I also believe C-USA needs to maintain its configuration as a national conference. Dropping play between divisions, or reducing the total number of conference games played will only further cheapen the C-USA brand.

or maybe it will give the teams more and better exposure, which helps the conference as a whole. there is virtually no exposure for CUSA conference games.

So, you think further isolating your program from the rest of the college football world would increase exposure for Southern Miss? 01-wingedeagle
