Cincinnati ranked as #14 best football-basketball combination school by SportingNews - TubaCat - 04-20-2017 01:42 PM

Who has the best football-basketball combination school in college sports?

Their methodology is based on overall record since 2010. Cincinnati is, of course, the only school currently in a G5 conference on this list. No surprise there. 07-coffee3

The paragraph about coaches Fickell and Cronin is quite complimentary, and they expect our football program to trend back upwards.

I like how Uc and Byu are in the top 15.

And the crime is we cannot get a P5 invite.

I wish it was stuff like this that counted in what conference you participated in.

I look at it differently. I view this as evidence that we ought to stop feeling sorry for ourselves.

Well said.

There may be more energy around football right now than ever before. And most of us feel pretty good about next year being Mick's best team...and a world class arena welcomes us home the year after.

Count me among those who can enjoy the ride in the moment. But also as one who believes a P5 invitation will happen when the game pieces move again.

Fickell's willingness to pound your chest is needed in the athletic department. I've felt for a few years that UC has never been a more attractive option for student athletes. We've never had the athletic facilities we have now, never had the football fan support we have now, never been higher rated academically, the area around campus has never been nicer, and campus is award winning for design. It's about time we start pounding our chests and being proud of all we've got rather than being apologetic about the one thing we don't, P5 affiliation.

Agree.

Also shows that our national reputation is better that we think given that the Sporting News included us in this list. They could have just run this story without us and possibly added another G5 school like San Diego State (who has been very successful in their own right over the same period of time) but they did not.

For some reason Sporting News likes UC. I remember back in the Big East days that it was the only website that gave the Big East its due.

Mike Decourcy lived in Cincinnati for a long time and did a great job covering the Bearcats back in the nineties when he was with the Enquirer.

Sporting News liked UC pre-BE as well. Sporting News was traditionally a well balanced publication. They tend to report, where SI and ESPN are in the promotion/agenda business.

Preaching to the choir

Assuming the Big 12 is even a decent option anymore.

RE: Cincinnati ranked as #14 best football-basketball combination school by SportingNews - bearcatfan - 05-08-2017 10:07 AM

I still wonder if UC's downward trend in football cost them a B12 invite last year. I think Houston and UC to the B12 would have been a wise move.

I think the B12 may have seriously considered UC but losing Ono and going downhill in football were two things that may have cost them.

Either that or the B12 is really that screwed up.

Doesn't have anything to do with it. Teams like byu, houston were hot and they had the same fate. Key is that you have proved you can have success and have a good market. You think Rutgers would be in the big 10 if results mattered. ha!

This. Plus the whole deal was a sham constructed by the Big12 to get more money out of the networks in exchange to eliminating the pro-rats clause in their media contract.

Which leads to the question - if the pro-rata clause is gone now and with ESPN even further from a position where they would be willing to offer more money, why are we still talking about expansion? It's over with respect to the B12. If the ACC doesn't come calling, we will be stuffed into a "best of the rest" conference.

If only Ono didn't fail. He should've overcome all the money the networks threw at the B12 to not expand. Glad that bum is gone!

Once the B12 realized that they could trade out that $$ expansion link to member expansion they concluded "Why expand, since expansion would take work"

They made a short sighted decision. The B12 is a temporary conference which ends as soon as OK and TX bolt and they will ASAP. I suspect as many as 6 will end up in the AAC and MWC.

Possibly. But the Big 12 proved once again to be the most dysfunctional branch of the P5 family tree. There were other valid reasons for expansion that they chose to ignore. I can't wait to watch their first CCG when team #2 upsets team #1 and both stay home to watch the college football playoff again.

Many of us knew UC could compete in the old Big East and the Bearcats made good on that bet. Let's hope Cincinnati gets that chance again as I see them competing effectively early on in either the B12 or ACC.
