Eight years ago, we hired a rookie head coach and gave him a ridiculously generous contract after only a couple of seasons, which forced us to keep him far too long.

Make numerous coaching errors during the season; to his credit he admitted to them?
Not motivate the team at least to the point they didn't quit on him; 2-8 last 10?

Ask fan to lower expectations; Memphis only succeeds every so often?
