Herd Softball! - SVHerd - 03-25-2017 06:36 PM

Lady Herd sweeps WKU today. Runs its record to 23-4. Third game of the series tomorrow. Way to go gals!

RE: Herd Softball! - HerdZoned - 03-25-2017 07:29 PM

Marshall is now 22-4, And just tied a program record of 14 games won in a row (2013 team won 14 in a row). They can break that tomorrow. Marshall was ranked 36th in RPI and was receiving votes in the top 25.

Shonda Stanton has done nothing but move this program forward each of her 18 years she has been in Huntington. Its quite remarkable really since her 1st 9 years she recruited to an empty field with a fence around it. We didn't have a softball complex until 2008.

There was 751 people that watched the 1st game of the series. Haven't seen a number for the 2nd game, but the announcers on WMUL said that most if not all stayed to watch the 2nd game.

If you live in or around Huntington, you should go watch them play, they are a fun team that knows how to win. The admission is the best....ITS FREE.

More impressive to me is that three current Herd softball members of the team are on active international team rosters.

Marshall senior Morgan Zerkle was selected to play on Team USA in summer of 2017. Junior Elicia D'Orazio is a member of Team Puerto Rico, and junior Eloise Tribolet is a member of Team France. D'Orazio and Tribolet actually played against each other last summer in a tournament in Italy. Zerkle was on USA Elite last summer, but play on Team USA this summer.

2012 Marshall softball grad Erika Bennett is still a member of Team Mexico.

Looking forward to when FIU plays Marshall. FIU is also on a hot streak and has won 16 in a row, with a current record of 30-6.

Marshall -- The Fastest Team On Dirt

Just scroll down.

Morgan Zerkle (29 Bases Stolen) and Elicia D'Orazio (33 Bases Stolen) have stolen more bases together this season than 278 DI teams have stolen.

Zerkle was just named CUSA Player Of The Week, again. Also the team RPI went up from 36 to 29 this week.

Sweet 16

Marshall Run Rules Morehead State

Marshall wins 8-0 after 5 innings. Jordan Dixon pitches a no hitter. This was Dixon's 94th career win at Marshall and she is now up to 989 Ks in a Herd uniform.

Its nice to see them playing well, i wonder if we lose to the notable teams early in the season if we played them now?

Their 4 losses are to #1 Florida State (#3 at the time, 32-1, RPI 6) twice 1-0 and 7-1. To UNC (Receiving 12 votes, 26-8, RPI 31) 8-3 and the only unexplainable loss to LIU Brooklyn (14-19, RPI 132) 5-4.

The 1st game with Florida State, Marshall out hit FSU 7-3. The Herd was thrown out at home twice. FSU had back to back doubles in the 1st inning and that's what won the game for them.

I could see us still competing with FSU better in the 2nd game, maybe playing and beating or at least give UNC a better game. With the way our bats are going right now we would probably crush LIU Brooklyn now.

Just look at it this way the LIU Brooklyn game was the 8th game of the year and at that point Marshall was 5-3. Since then they are 20-1, with the only loss being to UNC.

If Marshall just doesn't fall apart in conference they should get an at large if they were to fail to win the CUSA Title and get the auto bid. Same could be said for FIU also who is 30-6 (Receiving 10 votes, RPI 46).

Have to remember that while we certainly have improved throughout the season those other teams weren't in a vacuum and likely will have improved as well.

The only thing better Marshall is doing is hitting better. And that's because they are being a lot more patient.

After 1 inning Marshall leads 1-0 on a D'Orazio triple and then a Daiss (Dice) sacrifice bunt.

How in the hell can you be patient when a ball is coming 65 mph from 45 feet AND RISING

RE: Herd Softball! - HerdZoned - 04-09-2017 02:05 PM

Marshall now 32-5 with a week long sweep. The 1st with a mid week sweep of Wright State:

Wright State 2
Marshall 4
FINAL

Wright State 1
Marshall 9
5 inning run rule
FINAL

And this weekend Marshall just finished a 3 game sweep of FAU:

FAU 2
Marshall 4
FINAL

FAU 3
Marshall 6
FINAL

FAU 0
Marshall 2
FINAL

Despite not stealing a base for the 1st time this season, none was even attempted, Marshall beats FAU 2-0 in the last of a 3 game series. This with only 4 hits compared to FAUs 11 hits. Also senior pitcher Jordan Dixon wins her 98th and 99th games in the 1st 2 games with FAU and comes in the 3rd game to shut the door on FAU for the sweep.

Up next:
at #20 Kentucky 4-11
at FIU (DH) 4-14
at FIU 4-15

It's time to sat "A Lot at the Dot" campaign, a la "Jam the Cam". I've seen some comments that we should be entering the Top 25 this coming week after this sweep of FAU. We have a big series this weekend at FIU, who was also recently getting some votes in the Coaches Poll.

Marshall had 11 votes last week which put them 29th in the country only Wisconsin (33), California (24), North Carolina (20) where getting more votes. Marshall also sits at 26th in RPI.

They said there wasn't a seat left at the Dot for yesterdays game (The Dot holds 750) and there were people watching and tailgating in the outfield. In the early game they est. 500 or so and in the 2nd of the double header they said the Dot was full again.

With that said Marshall only has 3 games left at The Dot this year, a game with Ohio on 4-18 and a 2 game series with UAB to end on 5-5 and 5-6.

Marshalls remaining schedule is:

at Kentucky
at FIU (DH)
at FIU
Ohio
at Morehead State
at Virginia Tech
at Virginia Tech (DH)
at Middle Tennessee (DH)
at Middle Tennessee
UAB
UAB

RE: Herd Softball! - CoachMaclid - 04-09-2017 06:23 PM

Actually, UAB is a doubleheader on Saturday, so that's a three game series against UAB.

Results from this week were relative Herd friendly. There was a tie at #25 last week, and one of them split against #24, so I don't know if we break into the Top 25 this week, but rather will likely be just on the outside looking in.

#30 Marshall: (5-0 this week) Two vs Wright State, 3 vs. FAU
#29 North Carolina: (2-2 this week) Wins against Longwood and Notre Dame, 2 losses to Notre Dame
#28 California: (1-2 this week) Win against Saint Mary's, 2 losses to #15 Utah, 1 game cancelled
#27 Wisconsin: (2-1 this week) 2 wins and 1 loss against Iowa
#25 Ohio State: (1-2 this week) 1 win 2 losses against #18 Michigan
#25 Arkansas: (2-2 this week) Losses to #11 Oklahoma and #24 Missouri, 2 wins over #24 Missouri
#24: Missouri: (1-2 this week) 1-2 against #25 Arkansas

We play at #20 Kentucky on Tuesday, followed up with a series at FIU - who has been receiving votes.
