Where does the next wave of ACC coaching greats come from? - ken d - 03-07-2017 10:16 AM

There are six ACC basketball coaches age 64 or older:

Boeheim (72)
Krzyzewski (70)
Hamilton (68)
Larranaga (67)
Roy Williams (66)
Rick Pitino (64)

That's going to mean a serious talent drain within a few years. Behind them only Mike Brey (57) and Tony Bennett (47) are proven consistent winners at this level.

Where do the replacements come from, and will they be able to keep the ACC at its current pinnacle?

Aside from Miami and to a lesser extent FSU, all of those programs will have a smorgasbord to chose from. Cuse has a coach in waiting. Carolina, Duke and U of L certainly have a coaching tree they can pull from; but, I think those programs could open it up beyond the "family" have pick who they want. And, that include from programs like Zona, UCLA, UConn, etc. Only UK and Kansas are destinations that programs where something like that would be a lateral move. Prior to the "Dark Ages" or more commonly known as the Coach Doh years, Carolina's reluctance to look outside of the family really was the root cause of the era. If they would have opened the search up beyond the family, Carolina had its pick. The ADs in charge of replacing these coaches will need to look beyond the family.

Duke, in particular, will have to be careful not to fall into the trap of a "cult of personality" with Coach K that has bitten more than a few schools in recent memory. Coaching trees are impressive, but sometimes it is useful to inject fresh ideas into a program.

And when work "families" become intertwined with real families, alarm bells should go off in AD's heads.

I think you can comfortably put Buzz Williams in the proven winner category. He's taken a cellar-dwelling VT program to two straight 20-win seasons in only his third year on the job.

If you include his years at Marquette, the guy has 7 20-win seasons in his 11 years as a head coach. That's pretty remarkable if you ask me.

Dude, get over yourself. I can look at that video and think nothing of it when the overall record is 18-3 if I am not mistaken. So, not a big deal. So sensitive, no slight was intended.

Bottom line, when you compare the programs listed, two really stick out that isn't exactly like the others. Basically Miami's new success in basketball is new money when compared to the other programs listed; even when compared to FSU's basketball success. No shame in that. If anything, you should be happy with the fact that Coach Larranaga has taken this program to greater heights and it just might be looked upon as a very appealing place to coach. He certainly have proven that the U has a basketball culture and that you can win there.

Cuse will give Mike Hopkins 3 seasons...if we are NIT or worst...I can see them grabbing a rising Hot Shot.

I expect Hopkins to do well...not sure how well...hard to follow a legend.

I feel for Hopkins. It's hard enough to follow a legend, but I expect him to have a warm seat from day one. He didn't help himself much when he subbed for Boeheim during his suspension. Cuse fans will be watching him closely.

Perfect example: in 2000 UNC went after some very high profile, "family" names including Roy Williams, George Karl, Larry Brown and Eddie Fogler. All refused or didn't work out for some reason. UNC wound up with Matt Doherty. If somebody at Kansas hadn't PO'd Williams he might still be there.

Indiana is another example. They haven't been the same since Knight left.

Nah, just trying to ease the obvious (insert applicable neurosis) of a newbie to big time collegiate basketball. You are extremely talented with the MEMEs though.

Have to agree and Capel didn't do himself any favors either. I would think Amaker would get the call. He has redeemed himself from that Michigan stint. And, to be honest, the Michigan job should not be head against him.

You could also through in the Sidney Lowe hire as well. That certainly wasn't a good look for State.
