Neal Brown Receives 4-year Contract Extension - TroyFootball05 - 03-06-2017 03:32 PM

For those in the know on these types of things, does this in any way expand the likelihood that Troy keeps him longer than expected, or do bigger schools easily buy out these contracts?

It offers some protection, but not a lot. If, say, Kentucky wants him bad enough they will pay up.

The buyout is basically an insurance policy so if you lose him, his next employer owes Troy money.

Troy needs to pony up! I mean big time!
You want the best product in the Sunbelt you need to pay for it.
You want to be one of the best G5 schools you need to invest in it.

From the Rumor Hill, I heard his new base salary will be $850,000, with bonuses pushing him close to $1.3 million.

RE: Neal Brown Receives 4-year Contract Extension - moehler - 03-06-2017 05:22 PM

if true, that is a strong salary for a Sunbelt school, and you got to give credit to Troy's administration for stepping up and getting it done, but sadly, it wont stop a P5 school from coming after him, specifically Kentucky, got to think if their present Kentucky coach doesn't win atleast 8 games next year, they will come after Brown.

This is what I've heard

If True it's 2nd highest in SBC behind the over paid HUD with the Cajuns

Eh idk about that. Their main focus is always basketball... 6-7 wins is probably enough to keep him... they beat Louisville and got 7 wins last year. He's not on the hot seat currently

Will likely keep the Tulane's away but zero P5's.

Speaking of Hot Seats.....GS is in the top 30! We have finally arrived in the FBS

They have his record wrong at 6-6.

Colorado State gave Jim McElwain $1.5 million base salary with a $5 million buyout.

116 days later he took the Florida job.
No you can't prevent a coach from moving on even with a nice salary. What a nice salary gives you is a slight narrowing in jobs the coach will leave you for and a better pool when they do leave.

All it does is keeps other G5's away, and at least offers you decent compensation buyout wise if he does leave.

You can't fight City Hall.

If he pulls a Western Michigan and gets Troy ranked in the Top 15, I could see a high-level P5 snatching Brown up. If he gets Troy just in the Top 25 with an 11-2 or 10-3, I could see a mid-level P5 coming after him. If he has a 9-4 season, I could see him going to a lower-level P5. Any seasons that are 8-5 or below, I'm not sure if I see many P5's going after him, except maybe Kentucky.

He will always be on Kentucky's radar.

I'd watch out for Texas Tech too. Kingsberry seat is pretty warm. Remember Brown was a successful OC there.

RE: Neal Brown Receives 4-year Contract Extension - moehler - 03-07-2017 05:05 PM

that's whats scary, if he goes, lets say 9-3, Kentucky or TTU might pull the trigger anyway simply because they are worried someone else might snap him up a year ahead of him. I get the feeling its not going to take much for Kentucky or TTU to come up with a reason to fire their present coach and go after Brown. Both those coaches have to know that if they give their administration an excuse to fire them their probably gone.

RE: Neal Brown Receives 4-year Contract Extension - CardinalBlackTrojan - 03-07-2017 06:18 PM

Let's hope Texas Tech has a great season and Kentucky makes it to another bowl.

You guys worry too much. We change coaches like we change socks and it's all good. Just gotta go find that next young, hungry guy. Crap! I just gave away the formula!!!

I don't like that formula. Arkansas State is a G5 anomaly when it comes to successful coaching changes.

Ark St. has one of the best ADs in the conference. One that has made good hires. If they were to lose him they'd struggle more with coaching change.

Yes, they dont look at a new coaching hire as a way to go back to resetting the coaching salary to nothing like we just did. If we were willing to pay Fritz nearly 900K+/- then we should have had that as an option for the next coach but we went young and cheap and it is likely to cost more in the long run as we will likely have to buy him out instead of receiving a buy out like Troy and App will. We got exactly what we paid for.

Actually AState hired Anderson at $100,000 less than we hired Harsin and hired Harsin for $50,000 less than Malzahn.
From what I've been told if Chad Morris hadn't gone cold feet (twice in 24 hours), he would have made $100,000 more than Harsin.

Next guy at AState gets what we think it takes to hire that specific person rather than just declaring it is an X dollar per year job,

RE: Neal Brown Receives 4-year Contract Extension - sdcritter - 03-08-2017 09:31 AM

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek and most definitely a generalization. I will agree that our AD is a big part of it but our system president and chancellor had a ton of input on the hires. I think we're very fortunate to have a team that works to find the right person for the job. We lost our chancellor due to some shenanigans. Hope our new guy is just as good.
