EMU finally offers Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering - Luckeyone - 02-27-2017 11:16 PM

EMU also announced they'll offer a doctorate in nursing.

The ME degree will help with recruiting student athletes. UofM is expanding their medical field. Have you driven by their hospital? Unbelievable development. EMU should expand into offering more medical degrees and eventually a medical school.

Got to think big, if you want to be BIG.

Exc. news on ME. That is a STEM field and that is where the jobs and $ are.

Surprised about a doctorate in nursing. Certain professions are not strong doctoral programs including engineering, nursing, etc.

Not sure about a medical school. There is UofM, WSU, Oakland has something. That is a lot for S.E. Michigan.

Medical schools are extremely expensive and require a teaching hospital.

CMU has something in mid-Michigan. And WMU. Don't know if they are phy. ass't programs.

Physician assistant jobs are growing as the quoted number of new people insured in the last half dozen years is 20M.

Dear Friends,
I think medical school is not the direction that Eastern should be going. The most recent alumni magazine says that Eastern will be developing an interdisciplinary neuroscience program at the undergraduate level. This is the right direction, in my opinion. steve is right. the medical school thing is getting out of hand. You already have U-M, MSU, Wayne State, all with very established programs. Oakland, Western, and Central, now jumping in, is way too many for the State of Michigan.
Eastern needs to continue to develop programs that other schools do not have, like the coatings program that came about forty years ago.

Agree with Ken. I'd try to build/build up engineering.

EMU needs to strengthen STEM programs and that is one way to do it.

I agree with building up our engineering especially with autonomous test facility in our backyard. We need to go recruit some kids to get this program going just like Dr Anagnostou (sp?) did for the polymer and coating program. I actually took a class with him many years ago. He was very excited about the opportunities that program would provide his students.

Regarding Medical School, I disagree with you. UofM hospital is continually building and expanding their facilities due to opportunities. We should take on a few specialties and partner with St Joseph Hospital. The prestige alone would bolster our university's reputation. Maybe this is why WMU, CMU and Toledo are moving that direction. Health care and life expectancy should provide ample opportunity for all...My two cents:-)

One of the last projects I worked on before leaving EMU was helping get the Mechanical Engineering degree in motion.
There are roughly 10-15 students who have been taking the pilot courses and will be entering their Junior year of the program once it officially opens in the Fall.
Be on the lookout for two more exciting program that have the potential to come out of the College of Technology within the next year or so.

Hey KpJ, that's awesome! Are you a professor?

Do you know if EMU is recruiting candidates to teach in the ME department? I bet if EMU is smart, we start software/computer science engineering. Autonomous vehicles are going to take us by storm. Great opportunity for EMU to become a leader with the correct vision and execution.

I ran the Office of Student Services from 2008-2016.
You are definitely in the ballpark with your guesses as to what's next.

I'm long past the days of school, but I remember years ago a computer engineering student from Va. Tech who we had working with us during a summer or two.

Mechanical engineering, computer engineering, etc. are the way to go and EMU needs to 'diversify' well beyond its core education reputation.
