Baseball opening weekend predictions - EigenEagle - 02-15-2017 11:53 AM

http://sunbeltsports.org/calendar.aspx?path=baseball&season=2017&

Please correct me if any of this is wrong.

We have some tough games from non-power conferences. Xavier, Oral Roberts, UNCW, and Dallas Baptist are all preseason favorites in their respective conferences.

SELA, Western Carolina, and St Johns are no joke, either.

Weekend Series (15-7)
MTSU @ Georgia Southern (GS 2-1)
Little Rock @ Oral Roberts (Little Rock 1-2)
Eastern Illinois @ South Alabama (South 3-0)
New York Tech @ Arkansas State (StAte sweeps)
ULM @ Dallas Baptist (ULM 1-2)
Purdue @ Texas State (Texas State 3-1)
Xavier @ Troy (Troy 2-2)

Tournaments

Deep pitching makes Cajuns 3-0 on road at SELA tournament
Cajuns versus Southeastern Louisiana
Cajuns versus Murray State
Cajuns versus Hofstra

Kermit Smith gets off to 2-2 start with App State in Wilmington
App versus VMI
App versus George Mason
App versus VMI
App versus UNCW

Coastal Carolina goes 3-1 with maybe the toughest group of teams on the schedule
Coastal versus Richmond
Coastal versus Western Carolina
Coastal versus JMU
Coastal versus St. Johns

UTA goes 3-1 at SFA tournament
UTA versus Southeast Missouri
UTA versus Stephen F. Austin
UTA versus Southeast Missouri
UTA versus Stephen F. Austin

Georgia State goes 2-1 in their own tournament
Georgia State versus Marshall
Georgia State versus Western Michigan
Georgia State versus BYU

Overall (28-12)

EDIT - fixed Texas State
EDIT - fixed A-State opponent
EDIT - fixed Troy 4 games and not 3

The Cajuns will have their hands full Friday night with SELA right hander Mac Sceroler. He was a ten game winner for the Lions last year, beat the Cajuns in Hammond and is the preseason SLC Pitcher of the Year by more than one website.

Our series with Purdue is 4 games. Saturday doubleheader. Go ahead and put us down for a 3-1 weekend...

RE: Baseball opening weekend predictions - USAJag2011 - 02-15-2017 12:30 PM

USA will be breaking in 2 new starting pitchers this weekend. I still think we should be good enough to sweep the series, but I'm not very confident until I see how these new guys perform and until we get our rotation worked out. There are a lot of guys fighting for the Saturday and Sunday spots.

RE: Baseball opening weekend predictions - CardinalBlackTrojan - 02-15-2017 12:42 PM

Our series with Xavier is a 4-game series.

Should be a good series. Xavier was picked 1st place in the Big East preseason poll.

Troy is really under the radar this season it seems...

This is one of Troys best Hitting teams in years. Better than 2013 when we were ranked in top 25 at the end of the season.

But how is the pitching? It'll be an average season if the pitching sucks. It'll be a 40+ win season if the pitching is good.

Just a minor correction, NYIT is a Division 1 team. We don't play non D1 opponents.

Pitching should be pretty solid. Not the best we have had. But they have potential to be very good.

Marc Skinner returns for his senoir season at pitching As well as Corey Childress so there's some expierence.

The new guys coming in have real potential

RE: Baseball opening weekend predictions - chiefsfan - 02-15-2017 01:34 PM

As for why we're playing NYIT. They are our partners with our new Medical School. Series was scheduled because of that.

Plus, Georgia State can play nobodies for 4 weeks, we can play a noboday for 1 week.

You are sort of basing this off what your coaches are saying, no?

I base it off what I know personally about the team... but yes I do know a guy who works with the team. Though he isn't one of the coaches. But ya we do talk personally off the record.

Ahh, was just trying to clarify since we all know that no coach is going to tell you on the record bad stuff about the team.

I've got some off the record stuff on our team, but I keep it quiet out of their request, but my guess is that we win some games and lose some games this year.

RE: Baseball opening weekend predictions - EigenEagle - 02-15-2017 02:11 PM

No one but Little Rock was really impressive on offense last year. Coastal was statistically good on offense but lost some in the lineup.

The name of the game is do you have pitching depth and can you do situational hitting.

That's a fair assessment. Troy signed the #3 pitcher in Alabama, the #3 shortstop in Alabama (who was also the #10 pitcher in Alabama). The JUCO guys that were signed have tremendous stats as well.

RE: Baseball opening weekend predictions - CajunAmos - 02-15-2017 04:47 PM

I'm sure you're all glad to know the Cajun have the weekend rotation and top closer back from last year. You'll be especially glad that one of the weekend guys will probably get pushed to a middle reliever role due to signing a first team JC All-American who'll wind up our Sunday starter. We also have to highly regarded pitchers we redshirted last year. This will be possibly our deepest pitching staff we've ever had which is saying something.

We signed a top 100 freshman outfielder and one of the top JC catchers to come in to fill in a couple of holes in the position spots. If we can keep everyone healthy we should be better than last year. If we do we could be a good bit better. Needless to say, the 3500 season ticket holders will be very very happy if that's the case.

RE: Baseball opening weekend predictions - _x_ - 02-15-2017 05:10 PM

Bobcats rotation for opening weekend:
Freshman, Sophomore, Freshman, Sophomore.

RE: Baseball opening weekend predictions - CajunAmos - 02-15-2017 05:23 PM

Coastal fans, what is the best area for seating for visitors. I'm planning on making the weekend series and am trying to find some stadium info. I'll query you about local food joints as we get a little closer to the games.

I know 103 appears to be behind the visitors bench, but I was wondering for day games what areas tended to maybe be more covered by the canopy. How high up in rows do you have to be for it to have any effect (G, H, .....)?

I was also told the teal seats are more comfortable and they appear to be much more centered behind home plate. I note at this time there are a number of available seats in 104 and 105. Are youl finished with your season ticket packages since I seem to be able to purchase single game tickets?

Thanks

RE: Baseball opening weekend predictions - Tealblood - 02-15-2017 05:34 PM

Yes just "inside" 1st base 8-10 rows up would be best visiting seats

RE: Baseball opening weekend predictions - Tealblood - 02-15-2017 05:37 PM
