New NIT Team Fouls Rule for 2017 - B_Hawk06 - 02-15-2017 10:25 AM

The NIT continues to be a testing bed for NCAA basketball. This year, they will institute a new rule that allows for team fouls to be reset at the 9:59 minute mark of both halves. Essentially turning the game into four quarters for foul's sake.

This has to be some welcome news for Coach Keatts and the Seahawks, considering our propensity to put teams at the stripe so early in the halves due to the team foul count piling up. This would allow our 4 guard lineup to play much tighter, but we'd also have to be careful with certain big play makers (Cacock) fouling out, obviously. No change to the limit of personal fouls so far.

Thats a very interesting idea. I think that will definitely help us out as well as a team like Charleston

Charleston might hold teams to 15 points with this new rule. Can you imagine the whistle count?! And here I thought they wanted to speed the game up.

Well wait a second...the article says the fouls will work like the Women's game does: A 2-shot bonus comes on the 5th foul (no more 1-1). So in no way, shape or form will this cause teams to foul more.

I like the shot clock reset cap at 20 coming off a foul

I think these are going to flop. If they changed it to quarters (like they are trying to do without doing) it might work, but keeping track of that while play is going on will be its own challenge. They already changed the women's game over to quarters, if that was the direction they wanted to go they should have just done so.

I actually agree that teams will foul a bit more as you are essentially skipping the bonus until you hit the double bonus. So instead of 7 fouls and the team starts shooting, realistically it could be 9 fouls now before they start shooting. This will help teams counter the push to make the game played at a faster pace if they want to take the air out of the ball. The shot clock shortening does not help that but allowing more fouls can help that. We will see how it plays out, but without going to quarters I do not see this going well.

I would rather them go to quarters if it means eliminating some of the media timeouts, but ideally I would prefer a game where the only media timeout is at the under 10 minutes mark instead of each half being 5 segments of 4 minutes. I.e. there are too many media timeouts too close together. My opinion would be if you want all of those media timeouts, then we need to seriously reduce the number of team timeouts because with the game in 4 minute segments, teams really do not need more than like 2 timeouts. But I will get off of my soapbox now.

Money talks man! Each one of those TO's represents $$$$ for Radio, and or TV commercials. While not always on TV in our league, this would substantially hurt the bigger conferences that have significant amounts of games on TV.

Oh I am very much aware why they exist. But naturally, it is at the detriment of the game itself.
