Reds showing a pulse? Looks like a damn good deal.

According to @MLBPipeline -- Castillo is No. 5 prospect for Marlins and Brice is No. 9 ... #reds

OF Isaiah White is the 3rd player coming to #reds, @JoeFrisaro confirms. Ranked 16th prospect in Marlins system.

the marlins usually have a good farm. straily was a bright spot. hopefully this is another steal like suarez simon trade

RE: Reds Offseason - JunctaJuvant - 01-19-2017 10:52 AM

After the Mat Latos trade, I'm surprised the Marlins even pick up the phone when the Reds call.

RE: Reds Offseason - Lush - 01-19-2017 01:39 PM

good call

RE: Reds Offseason - scvanguard1 - 01-19-2017 04:05 PM

I think this is a good trade for both sides. 2 24 year old pitchers and a 20 year old outfielder for a 28 year old waiver wire pick up. His numbers were excellent even though he gave up a league leading 31 HRs. Pitching down there, those numbers will go down. Best of luck to him!

Cincinnati Reds trade Dan Straily for 3 prospects

Nearly 10 months ago, Dan Straily was traded from the Houston Astros to the San Diego Padres for a backup catcher, and almost immediately placed on waivers. After being claimed by the Cincinnati Reds, he proceeded to rebuild his value as a major-league pitcher.

He’s worth a lot more now, and the Reds know it. On Thursday, they traded the 28-year-old right-hander to the Miami Marlins for a prospect haul that some evaluators feel rival the four-player package the Reds received for Aroldis Chapman last winter.

In exchange for four years of control over the right-hander, the Marlins gave up pitching prospects Luis Castillo and Austin Brice and outfield prospect Isaiah White. All three show up among Miami’s top 10 prospects, depending on the source, with Castillo as the clear headliner.

“At least I wasn’t traded for a bucket of balls,” Straily said.

The high price the Reds set for Straily is evidence of his value to Cincinnati. The righty pitched 191 ⅓ innings in 2016 and posted a 3.76 ERA, providing much needed rotation stability as the Reds slogged through a 68-94 campaign. Entering the winter, his innings looked to be too valuable to do without again.

That’s why the Reds were aggressive with their ask when the Marlins inquired about him around the general managers meetings in November. Miami shopped around afterward, but kept checking back over the course of the next few months. Each time, Cincinnati president of baseball operations Dick Williams sensed the Marlins were more willing to include the prospects he wanted.

Things started heating up the last couple of weeks.

“In the beginning, we identified some of these guys as guys that we absolutely were targeting,” Williams said. “We made it clear that we wouldn’t go forward if we couldn’t get access to those guys. Over time, they became available to us in the deal. They were not at first.”

The centerpiece is Castillo, a 24-year-old signed as an amateur out of the Dominican Republic in 2011. He transitioned to starting from the bullpen midway through the 2015 season, and last year recorded a 2.60 ERA and 1.003 WHIP in 131 ⅔ innings between High- and Double-A.

He features a fastball that can reach triple digits, along with a slider and change-up. He’s old for his current stage of development but has advanced quickly the last couple years, and Williams will hold off on seeing where he slots in the organization until after spring training.

“He didn’t have a lot of time in Double-A, so that’s something that can be in the cards,” Williams said. “But he may be a guy that can move quicker than that. He certainly has the arsenal to support moving quickly up the ladder.”

Brice is a big-bodied 24-year-old righty who pumps 95 mph fastballs and has a chance to help out in the big-league bullpen this season. The 20-year-old White is super athlete and 2015 third-rounder, but hasn’t cracked hitting yet and will likely start 2017 in the low minors.

It’s an impressive haul, but the deal leaves the Reds thin when it comes to big-league innings. The rotation currently consists of strong-when-healthy Anthony DeSclafani, second-year starter Brandon Finnegan and veteran Homer Bailey, who will be trying to pitch a full season for the first time since 2013 after two arm surgeries.

Williams hopes some of the team’s young pitching prospects step up to fill the void, but will monitor the free agent market for rotation help just in case. He knows it’s a risk to ship away a player the big-league club needed to survive in 2016.

But the Reds also have earned criticism in the past for holding onto pieces too long. This time, they’ve sold high instead of low.

“I am committed to bringing us back to championship baseball,” Williams said. “You’ve got to take risks. We thought this was an opportunity to trade someone who had built up a lot of value last year and could bring us back some impact talent we just couldn’t pass on.”

Straily is grateful for the opportunity the Reds afforded him. He enjoyed his year in Cincinnati, acquiring a comfort not only with his big-league pedigree but also with a potential future with the Reds. He proactively lined up his spring training accommodations in Goodyear, Ariz., way back in August.

He spent Thursday morning scrambling with the logistics of a spring in Florida instead, but is at peace with what’s ahead of him. It’s a familiar feeling – this is the fourth time he’s been traded since 2014 – but it’s also a little different now that he’s the star of the deal not a buy-low gamble.

“This is part of the business I’m in,” he said. “Until you get to that ten-year, magical no-trade stuff, what do you do? You go to whoever wants to have you on their team.”

The Enquirer's C. Trent Rosecrans contributed to this report.

The Cincinnati Reds agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.3 million with veteran right-handed pitcher Scott Feldman, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

The deal reportedly includes $2.2 million in incentives.

Quote:Tweet from Rosenthal:

Source: RHP Scott Feldman to #Reds on one-year, $2.3M contract. Deal could max out at $4.5M with incentives. Has passed physical; deal done.

Feldman turns 34 on Feb. 7. He is 71-77 with a 4.40 ERA in 12 big-league seasons, but has only pitched in the National League for part of one season (with the Cubs in 2013).

Feldman last pitched for Toronto, recording an 8.40 ERA in 14 relief appearances after he was traded in August of 2016 by the Astros to the Blue Jays for minor-leaguer Lupe Chavez.

Feldman had been primarily a starting pitcher until 2016. Of his 40 appearances in 2016 between the Astros and Blue Jays, only five were starts.

Reds trading second baseman Brandon Phillips to Braves
8:25 AM ET

ESPN.com news services

Long rumored to be on the move, Brandon Phillips is finally leaving Cincinnati. A source told ESPN's Buster Olney on Sunday that the Reds have agreed to a trade that will send the second baseman to the Atlanta Braves.

It's not clear who the Reds will get in return. Fox Sports was first to report that the sides were close to a deal.

The Braves have a need for a second baseman. Infielder Sean Rodriguez will undergo surgery on his left shoulder and will miss three to five months, according to Fox. Rodriguez, his wife and two young children were involved in a serious car accident on Jan. 28, when they were T-boned by a stolen Miami police cruiser. He suffered the injury during the crash, Fox Sports reported.

Trying to rebuild, the Reds have dealt stars over the past couple of years, including Jay Bruce, Aroldis Chapman and Johnny Cueto. Phillips, however, has a full no-trade clause and rejected a trade to his hometown of Atlanta earlier this offseason. Last winter he turned down potential trades to the Arizona Diamondbacks and Washington Nationals.

Phillips is in the final year of a six-year, $72.5 million extension that he signed in 2012. He will make $14 million in the coming season, and Fox Sports reported that Cincinnati will pick up most of his salary.

The 35-year-old Phillips has played 15 years in the majors, the last 11 with Cincinnati. He is a three-time All-Star who is a .275 hitter and has won four Gold Gloves. Last season, Phillips hit .291 with 11 homers and 64 RBIs.

Unfortunately, they waited too long to do this. I realize Phillips had a no-trade clause, but the Reds should have tried to incentivize this move about 4 years ago when he still had trade value.

Reds will receive ML pitchers Andrew McKirahan and Carlos Portuondo.

A source told ESPN's Jim Bowden that Phillips passed his physical Sunday and will retain his full no-trade rights, which he waived to approve the trade to Atlanta.

The Reds will receive left-handed pitcher Andrew McKirahan and right-hander Carlos Portuondo, sources told ESPN. The 27-year-old McKirahan appeared in 27 games in relief for the Braves in 2015, posting a 5.93 ERA. He has undergone Tommy John surgery in 2012 and again last year. Portuondo is a 29-year-old Cuban whose only American experience is 17 games between Single A and Triple A last season.

So....

Reds still pay most of his salary

Get a 27 year old off two tommy john surgeries

And get a 29 year old A ball player

This front office just tops themselves at every turn

Only fools and idiots would actually pay to watch the crap castellini is putting out there.

RE: Reds Offseason - Bearcat Otto - 02-12-2017 03:39 PM

They were going to pay his full salary in 2017 anyway. He was not going to play every day. Why not let him go to play in Atlanta until Rodriguez is back from surgery and in the process we got two roster fillers in the minors? Seems OK to me.

Ironically the trade with the Indians to get him was one of the best trades in Reds history.

He has to go unfortunately, but he was very entertaining to watch over his career here.

This trade was done simply to get the young guys playing time and to avoid the looming clubhouse issue of Phillips losing playing time/being benched.

Nobody was going to give up anything worth any value for Phillips.

RE: Reds Offseason - RealDeal - 02-12-2017 04:56 PM

Reds had 2 options. 1 was to release him and get no money back. 2 take this trade and get $1 million back. No brainer. Unless you think having a guy who's not going to be here when we're done rebuilding take at bats away from Perazza and Herrera makes sense.

Good points. I'll miss BP and I appreciate all that he brought to the Reds and Cincinnati over the years. But I have no problem with the trade. I wish him the best.

RE: Reds Offseason - BeerCat - 02-12-2017 06:01 PM

Honestly with the horse **** that Phillips had pulled denying several trades to major contenders and if you're going to pay him anyways, I'd have rather they let his ass rot on the bench.
