MBB Transfer - Rocket_Fanatic - 01-04-2017 06:15 PM

Willie Jackson from Missouri, a 6-6 SF, is transferring here to be closer to his family. He is from Garfield Hts, the same school as incoming PG Marreon Jackson. I believe he will have to sit out next season.

Says he is transferring this semester, so should be eligible next January.

Sounds like a nice pickup

RE: MBB Transfer - Screwball - 01-04-2017 07:46 PM

A replacement for Lauf (who has improved this year IMO)?

RE: MBB Transfer - DetroitRocket - 01-04-2017 08:17 PM

Now we need to add a center. No more small teams!!!

I believe someone here reported something about the recruiting was geared to get some big guys. Coach's show, or perhaps an article, don't remember, could be FOS.

Get a couple more Steve Taylor's if at all possible; what a beast.

They doubled and tripled him last night and he pulls off a 9/15/7. You gotta want to rebound, it can't be taught. He's a senior, sat a year, hungry to prove himself. That just shows his intent and intensity (and ability). What a steal.

OT alert.

Random thoughts;

I got hosed out of almost all the first half on TV (due to that other provider I think).

That was a pisser.

The announcers sucked.

Jon Jon has been more patient and smart, along with some better D. He's playing with a lot of confidence, and when he plays like that he can score at will no matter who they play it seems. And showing better leadership.

We have a point guard, his name is Sanford. Turning into a solid player. Loved his drives to the hoop last night. He can handle the job (which allow JJ to play the 2 spot, which is where he probably should be).

Lauf continues to bring the head defenseman aspect (in the hockey vernacular) to both ends of court, along with more scoring from previous years. A good 3 guy (in the MAC at least).

The kids are getting some minutes, which is good, they will be needed before the year is over. Rogers (I think that is his name) could be a wildcard if playing time produces quality minutes to rest JJ and Sanford.

Wow! I babble too much. But it was a good win and I'm pumped.

Also, someone talked about some tickets in a couple of other threads. That's a neat thing. I would take a shot at them if the timing and situation were right. Haven't been there for over 10 years. Would love to go again (have history). So please continue to let us know if you have some to get rid of.

Well at least the announcers from last night's game (provided by the American Sports Network) were very complimentary towards our University.

I bolded your last point just to stress that people should keep doing that...if you're going to give away/sell your tickets, might as well let a diehard on here have 'em.

And yeah, the new transfer will definitely be eligible next January. Missouri is not very good, but it seems like it could be a solid pickup as he's getting considerable minutes coming off the bench in 11 games as a true freshman.

5.9 ppg
4.6 rpg

RE: MBB Transfer - pono - 01-05-2017 02:03 AM

this is a fairly big deal. jackson was well recruited and he was getting some things done as a freshman. don't know enough about his game to say what kind of impact he will have or if he can be the go to type, that he wants to be. however, he certainly gives us an athletic active replacement on the wing who can rebound and should be able to help with jonjon and Lauf's lost production. Coach K has a strong track record with transfers. You could argue that's where he is best as a coach. He has repeatedly been able to get guys to use that RS year to mature and improve and bust out that next year. Remember, we have the colorado transfer who is an athletic 6-7 guy who can score, and a 5th year player who should be a mature presence. With Sanford coming into his own and Knapke looking good and a pretty good class coming in some of the gloom about the future of the program is now starting to fade.

Sanford might play point now but next year the team will need him as a two. Good 3 or range

RE: MBB Transfer - Basketball Jones - 01-05-2017 03:02 PM

A High School Basketball Beat Writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer told me recently that New UT Assistant Men's Basketball Coach DeAndre Haynes is a great recruiter, and that his ties to the Cleveland area as a former Assistant Basketball Coach at Kent State will pay major dividends for Toledo in the future to the detriment of the Golden Flashes. I think those dividends are beginning to pay off with the recent signings of Garfield Height's Marreon Jackson and Willie Jackson!

RE: MBB Transfer - Screwball - 01-05-2017 03:12 PM

Hope so. Bring'em!

Considering he had offers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, & ten other schools, and considering Toledo usually never gets recruits with that type of resume...

Yes, this is a big deal.

If Haynes can coach Defense anywhere near the way he played D ... well then look out for the Rockets. I loved the way this guy played at Kent State

the colorado transfer on the roster, fletcher, was a higher ranked recruit out of HS. taylor was a top 75 player nationally. jd weatherspoon was a top 200 recruit. coach k has brought it a consistent flow of highly recruited transfers. he's also tried to keep a roster spot open late in the recruiting process for such opportunities which has usually paid off.
