2017 CUSA Baseball - BeagleUSM - 12-28-2016 11:21 PM

I know basketball is just starting to heat up, but some of us root for schools that only have 1 D1 win. 01-lauramac2

Only about 50 days until Opening Day. What is everyone looking like this year? Rice should be solid per usual, of course, but I think LaTech has the potential to actually win the league. They return nearly everyone, and I think Burroughs might be a better coach than Goff. I'll also go out on a limb and say FIU might surprise people, appears they return just about everybody as well. Melendez is a solid coach too.

Word on the street in Hattiesburg is that this team can really, really hit but pitching is a question. Kirk McCarty should be almost certainly our Friday night guy, with Hayden Roberts and Stevie Powers possibly rounding out the weekend rotation.

My guess at predicting the league:

1) Tech (NCAA)
2) Rice (NCAA)
3) USM (NCAA)
4) FAU (NCAA)
5) FIU
6) Charlotte
7) ODU
8) MTSU
9) UAB
10) WKU
11) Marshall
12) UTSA

What makes us 11th?

No Bossi, Gee, Bird, or Dean. Also lost entire weekend rotation + closer.

RE: 2017 CUSA Baseball - Doots4Dawgs - 12-28-2016 11:50 PM

Baseball is my remaining hope to win a conference title this season! I think the basketball team will do ok in conference as usual, but baseball is the best chance.

I didn't know ODU was voted out of the league

Ruh roh.

Also, who is the other school that doesn't field a team besides UTEP? If I remember correctly we had an odd number of baseball programs until the new teams came in.

Side question- why does UTEP not have a team? Title XI?

I respect your opinion but I don't think UTSA will be that bad. Last year there were a lot of injuries but this is still a good team. All of the bats return including the power hitting infield and UTSA gets back one of their top pitchers who is returning from a medical redshirt season. Last year was the only year UTSA didn't finish in the middle of the pack or better.

RE: 2017 CUSA Baseball - MonarchCAM - 12-29-2016 11:05 AM

We do still exist, and from what I've heard, have some pretty good new arms coming in.

RE: 2017 CUSA Baseball - Collin_Ellis - 12-29-2016 11:11 AM

From what I have heard about the 2017 Tech squad is that we will have a potent offense and good defense. SS is unknown defensively but we will be very good behind the plate and have really good OFs. Pitching is a concern too. Sutton and Linck will be a solid 1-2 but have to replace Diehl. We shall see! Bullpen will be good.

Dear OP, ODU still sponsors Baseball and is a current member of this conference.

1-5 is right on. 6-12 will be wide open. UAB will much more consistent this year. I'm looking forward to getting back to Burg.

Tech is hosting Arkansas in a midweek 2 game "series"

I hope in the future we can get a weekend series with SELA, Tulane, or ULL. If Tech baseball can show they are for real about baseball this season then we may see something like that.

Don't give up on MBB just yet. If OOC rankings can be believed then it shapes up as a 4 or 5-team race (MTSU with a step on the rest but I don't expect one team to win both the regular season & tourney). Dogs are 2nd in CUSA in KenPom right now. (Though not as strong as some of your recent teams, to be sure)

Yeah, I hope we won't have the injuries we had last year. I was at the pre-season Baseball Banquet last year, and was taken aback by how many guys we had wearing casts and whatnot before the season even started.

Coach Marshall has been with UTSA for 13 years now, the last four as our head coach. In his first three seasons as HC, we went 35-25, 35-26, and 33-25. Last year's 17-34 record was a shocker, and the worst season we've had since the turn of the century when we went 17-37 in 2000. Hopefully we'll turn it back around again, as such futility has been common to our basketball program, but definitely not baseball.

RE: 2017 CUSA Baseball - ThunderingHerdFan - 01-01-2017 01:32 AM

This looks familiar.

We'll see if Marshall was lightning in a bottle last year or if that was a firm foundation for building the program. A repeat of last year's conference run is asking a lot but we will see if the Herd can stabilize at a level of consistency that is better than 11th in the league.
