UNCW #11

RE: Warren Nolan RPI Live update - billthebighawksfan - 12-11-2016 06:11 PM

This is good but this team needs to rebound better and play good half court defense. The Hawks are allowing a lot of drives and while they chase people off the line, they still need to get more stops. I'd like to see us play a little bit bigger at times to see what happens. Who knows? Defense is a constant with championship teams so I'd really like to see UNCW play better defense. It was good to see Marcus play with a bit more confidence for a spell and for Chuck to play some. At some point, UNCW is going to need them. Not sure if Elmore is ready yet, but it's good to have some bigs getting some PT.

RE: Warren Nolan RPI Live update - 82hawk - 12-11-2016 06:22 PM

Our small guards have a hard time stopping the drive. And with a 4 guard offense, it exposes our one rim defender who has to be careful not to foul. I'm not sure how this can be fixed.

RE: Warren Nolan RPI Live update - billthebighawksfan - 12-11-2016 07:35 PM

It looked to me like they could help a little bit more on drives and then recover. I've seen them make that adjustment. Carolina looked to struggle in that area tonight.

After the win at Towson, UNCW still hanging tight at #15. Pretty impressive company when you look at the top 25 and there we are....

RE: Warren Nolan RPI Live update - billthebighawksfan - 01-01-2017 01:01 AM

It is great company '82, but we all have the same concern...rebounding and post defense. I love great guard play and wing play, but UNCW still needs to keep concentrating on rebounding the ball collectively. UNCW has guys that can absolutely drain the 3 and they need to look for it, but need to get "great" looks, not just good looks-the good looks generally have better rebounding support as well. UNCW needs to be more patient in half court sets and they need to buckle down better in help situations.

To me, it's how we play and not that we just win. If UNCW plays the right way, I okay with the results because that will be best in the longer term. Most CAA teams, heck 300 out of the 351 teams, aren't used to high tempo so that's a big advantage right there. How you finish is how you're remembered. It starts Monday.

IMO, we took a great step forward against Towson.

1. We won handily on the road with Flemmings still in a slump. When you have last years Tournament MVP, and this years pre-season POY pick on your squad in a funk, getting W's is big.

2. Cacok went the first half against a big, bruising frontcourt and didn't foul once. As a result, he stayed on the floor for almost the entire game racking up points and rebounds. This is a tough team to beat when he's on the floor. Not sure how, but i'd love to see the +/- when he's in.

3.With Cacok on the floor, and better boxing out, we went from giving up 12 offensive boards to Towson in the first half to only three in the second half.

If Cacok can stay out of foul trouble, and play without fear of sitting for at least 30 minutes, we're a really good team.

The Live Stats format that CAA teams use has +/-. Games at teams in other conferences may or may not use that Live Stats format. Here's Cacok's +/- in his last four games:

+27 vs. Radford
+4 vs. East Carolina
-4 vs. Clemson
+9 vs. Towson

Wow. Thanks. Unfortunately against Clemson, Cacok usually went out when he fouled, and barely played, so they were shooting FT's he caused....

As for Cacok's improvement - Thus far, I don't think we have had a player improve more from the end of his freshman year to the beginning of his sophomore year since Danny Davis. We have had guys improve but imho none more than Danny & Cacok.

Agreed. The leap he made this offseason was astounding. He was hardly ever a factor his freshman year.

Yep, I really like Davonte!

RE: Warren Nolan RPI Live update - 82hawk - 01-02-2017 10:13 PM

After beating Elon, we drop two spots to #17.

That's part of the reason so many coaches would rather play DII teams than weak DI teams....doesn't lower your RPI.

We can look forward to our RPI falling from here on out. Towson losing probably contributed to that as well.

RE: Warren Nolan RPI Live update - solohawks - 01-03-2017 07:52 AM

Northeastern took Towson's spot in the top 100

Not too much. Our Conference RPI rank of 11 (which won't really move) means that it won't tank unless we lose some bad games. Any wins over Charleston and Northeastern will be quality ones. And wins over the "middling" teams (such as W&M, Elon, and Hofstra), especially on the road, will be pretty good too.

Even our upcoming games against Drexel and Delaware, both sub-200 teams, won't be too bad because they're on the road. As long as we win, that is.

Yeah but it screws your "sniff test"

UNCW takes down William and Mary and Hofstra and drops to #30 RPI with Warren Nolan.
