UTA opens with Sam Houston on Friday at home. Sam is always a favorite in the SLC. On Sat. they host Ark-Pine Bluff and Sacramento St.

Coastal is good in just about everything. They were truly an all-sports add.

RE: 2016 volleyball season - chiefsfan - 08-22-2016 12:28 PM

We face an incredibly tough nonconference schedule this year. Week One we face NC State and TCU, Week two we face CUSA Champ Western Kentucky, (Who is always good at Volleyball), a Week 3 game with Ole Miss and NCAA tournament rep Missouri State, and a Week 4 game against Indiana. Naturally we then immediately start conference play by facing App State and Coastal back to back on the road.

We do have a home nonconference tournament for the first time in a long time this year, so we're not looking at some 15 game road trip to start the year again like last year.

Seriously though, I think we will stumble a bit in some sports due to the increased competition overall. I hope we are going full CoA as that would help us close any gaps and help set us apart from regional schools in the non-revenue sports.

Finding cost of attendance data for all Div.I schools across all sports is very difficult.Hopefully someday a national media outlet will publish a chart showing details.Part of the problem is that some schools are still phasing in COA for some sports. Also some are paying only like 50-75% of COA in a particular sport.Very confusing and disjointed.

We open the season at The North Texas Challenge in Denton, with Games against:
Ohio State, UNT, and Nevada before coming home to host Baylor . . .

Some good "tests" early. . . . Whatever doesn't kill you . . . . . You know . .

I think Arkansas State is one of only a couple SBC schools paying 100 percent to all Athletes. Several schools are just paying one or two sports.

As far as I recall TXST is paying full COA.

We realized if you're going to do it then doing it fairly is the way to go.

Volleyball has always kept 16 games because they like to have the tournament right around Thanksgiving.. There was discussion about moving to 18, with some coaches in favor because of the ridiculous situation where everyone has to play 9 or 7 league home games, but I think the AD's at those schools where Volleyball exists because of Title IX won out in the battle to not have to pay for staff to be around over Thanksgiving.

RE: 2016 volleyball season - FoUTASportscaster - 08-25-2016 02:00 PM

Prepare to hear childishness, but then those schools should get seven home games.

UTA and TXST have led the league in attendance every year since they have been in the SBC. The 'cats had 11,851 and UTA had 10,176 last year. After that Troy had 7,015.

RE: 2016 volleyball season - FoUTASportscaster - 08-26-2016 10:37 PM

After winning the first two sets, UTA beats Sam Houston 3-2. Could have been a sweep, but Sam won the third set 27-25.

RE: 2016 volleyball season - chiefsfan - 08-26-2016 11:05 PM

AState leaves Northwestern State curled up in the corner in the fetal position after a blowout 3-0 win. We had at least an 8 point lead in every set.

Schedule gets much tougher tomorrow with matches against NC State and Big 12 Power TCU.

RE: 2016 volleyball season - CatMom - 08-27-2016 12:08 AM

TXST lost in straight sets to #15 Ohio State. Not saying it was a bad loss (it was on the scoreboard) because Coach needs to challenge the team. I think it was a good opening test to get them battle ready.

North Texas Challenge
Friday - Ohio State
Saturday - UNT
Sunday - Nevada

Tuesday - Baylor at home

App State falls in 5 to Va Tech in the Hokies tourney. Scores were 22-25, 33-31, 24-26, 26-24, 15-8. This a young Mountaineer squad. While a disappointing loss, the team showed promise on the road in Blacksburg.

Coastal pulled off sweeps in both matches of a double header, vs FAMU and FIU, at FIU/Miami's co-hosted tourney. Neither was close. Today we get Miami in the championship.
