Read this on Wolken tweet. I hate it. The end of an era. RIP, George.

There really is no replacement in this market for the old goat. He was a pro in a market full of amateurs. He will be missed.

That was quick. To be honest, I spent about 20 years "hating" his guts - not as a man, but as the UT/SEC homer that he undeniably was. He had nothing against UofM (and genuinely loved Tiger basketball), but like many native Memphians, viewed the university as "Tigah High" and seriously doubted that a great future was possible. He also seemed very abrasive to those he did not know, but I guess that was partly his frankness and due to being cussed many times by strangers.

I guess I was about 50 years old when I softened/matured and began to see him more as a fellow Memphian and a decent man who knew and truly loved college athletics. Sorry to hear the news - I will miss him.

RIP to a man who was a strong supporter of the U of M and the Memphis area.

It seemed harsh when I read your post, but honestly, those have been my feeling about GP too. RIP George Lapides.
