This new G-5 pay scale is worrisome. In this age of cord cutting and extra large P-5 contracts it will be difficult to get paid.

Even worse. Can you imagine all the expenses just with flights, hiring negotiation firm, etc for this deal.

Getting scary. In 10 years a lot of those schools won't be playing football

RE: CUSA TV revenue worse than thought - GreenWave16 - 06-07-2016 05:28 PM

I think the AAC will be just fine, we all knew C-USA would take a hit. Honestly from top to bottom that conference is worse then any conference in any division to to even get the peanuts they are getting is a miracle. They should actually be grateful because I think ESPN way overpaid for that garbage. I think with our markets and academics I look for our tv revenue to double come negotiation time. The separation from the P6 and G4 is about to get Grand Canyon wide in a few years.

Whats even worse than a $200,000 payout...CUSA lost a lot of ESPN exposure...and now will have 10 games on beIN Sports, an Al-Jazeera subsidiary...in addition to a handful of games on CBS Sports, ESPN and American Sports Network (whatever that is).

I think this is the death nail for that conference, they should seriously listen to logic and drop down to FCS. Eric Bischoff said it best after answering why WCW was sold to WWE. He said without the tv time to air the product, the company is worth 20 bucks. C-USA is now worth 20 bucks.

Ehhh---other than the CCG, they had zero exposure on ESPN. They were only on Fox (mostly on the RSN's), CBS-Sports, and ASN. They actually will get 5 games on ESPN and a bunch of their football, basketball, and non-revenue Olympic sports will show up on ESPN3. The exposure part of their deal is an improvement over the spotty ASN coverage that was the sole access point for 30-something CUSA games last year.

Additionally, I'd say the majority of the schools are getting a slight bump in pay (the WAC and Sunbelt refugees were getting $100K a year or less). I thought it would be a little higher than 200K a year. I was thinking it might be 5-7 million a year ($350K to $500K per team). I think the problem was they didn't draw very well during the last few years of their old contract, so the track record data probably hurt them a bit. Add that to the somewhat tepid market for less prestigious sporting events, and the result wasn't pretty.

For us, back in 2013, there was no data to judge us on. The assumption was our shaky G5 league woudnt do very well. Turns out our ratings have been waaaay better than expected. Assuming that continues--we should be a reasonably attractive sports media property when renegotiation time rolls around.

UTEP and Rice should apply to the MWC...

Marshall and ODU should apply to the MAC...

The remaining 10 would get a boost by splitting their playoff money 10 ways instead of 14.

RE: CUSA TV revenue worse than thought - Pirate1 - 06-07-2016 07:20 PM

The state of Virginia passed a law limiting student fees for supporting athletics on state school campuses. Currently ODU funds 73% of its athletic cost through student fees. It must limit it to 55% with about 9 years to get to that number. Time for new funding models.

RE: CUSA TV revenue worse than thought - bit_9 - 06-07-2016 08:00 PM

Despite the **** deal it's still miles better than fcs.

But to add to what pirate said so that figure is accurate.

In 2012-13, ODU funded 73 percent of its athletic budget with student fees. That fell to 70 percent a year later and to 65.1 percent in 2013-14. According to a recently released USA Today database, the number dropped again, to 64.6 percent, in 2014-15 – the last year for which full budget figures are available.

I expect that number to continue to go down as each year we break previous records in funding.

Yep this is a **** deal no two ways about it. The only encouraging thing is we are doing well on fund raising front. Last year we rose 8.1 MM 600k more than previous year. This year the goal is set to 10 MM. We will see how that goes.

No, I stink of academics, markets, and money from tv revenue. Good luck with the Pizza Hut coupons you got for your new tv deal. I am sure they will go to good use.
