Cajuns Set to Host Third Consecutive NCAA Regional

May. 15, 2016 Softball

LAFAYETTE – For the third consecutive season, and fourth time in the past five seasons, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team will host an NCAA Regional at Lamson Park after being awarded the No. 14 seed in the 2016 NCAA Softball Tournament.

The Lamson Park-based regional is scheduled to run Friday-Sunday, May 20-22. The Ragin' Cajuns received their assignment Sunday evening during the NCAA Softball Selection Show. The Sun Belt Conference champions were awarded the league's automatic bid into the postseason event, which was secured when they topped Texas State in Saturday's conference tournament championship game.

The Ragin' Cajuns are set to appear in the NCAA Tournament for the 18th consecutive season, a streak which dates back to the 1999 season. The Ragin' Cajuns carry a four-year streak of advancing to at least the NCAA Super Regional round (2012-15). The last of the program's six NCAA Women's College World Series appearance came in 2014.

Michael Lotief's squad earned a national seed for the third straight season and fourth time in the past five seasons. The Ragin' Cajuns were seeded No. 13 a year ago, No. 6 in 2014 and No. 14 in 2012.

The NCAA Lafayette Regional will feature the top-seeded Ragin' Cajuns (43-7), Texas A&M (37-18), Texas (37-14) and Boston University (28-22). The winner of the regional will play the winner of the NCAA Norman (Okla.) Regional which features No. 3 national seed Oklahoma (47-4), Ole Miss (39-20), Tulsa (35-19) and Wichita State (35-19) in the super regional round for a trip to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Action in the NCAA Lafayette Regional begins Friday with Texas A&M and Texas at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN2 followed by Louisiana and Boston University at 6 p.m., on ESPNU. A complete listing of times for games on Saturday and Sunday are to be determined.

'Cats Are Going Dancing; Softball Earns Spot In NCAA Tournament

Texas State will take on Alabama, Cal, and Samford in Tuscaloosa Regional
Jen Lawson, Assistant Sports Information DirectorMay. 15, 2016 Softball

SAN MARCOS, Texas – After finishing with a 39-20 overall record and runner-up finish in the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, the Texas State softball team has earned a spot in the Tuscaloosa Regional beginning Friday in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Bobcats will play Cal in its seventh NCAA Regional appearance in school history at 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

We're going to REGIONALS!!! Tuscaloosa, here we come!!!

May 16, 2016
This is just the second time in school history that the Bobcats have earned an at-large bid with five conference tournament championships sending them the other times. The last regional appearance for head coach Ricci Woodard and the Bobcats was in 2012.

"I couldn't be more proud of this group of young ladies and what they have accomplished and the hard work that they have put in," said Woodard. "It's very deserving and well-earned for a team that has worked their tail off to get to this spot."

Alabama, the host of the regional, earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. In addition to Cal and 'Bama, Samford is the fourth team in the Bobcats regional. Texas State most recently competed against Cal during the 2014 season. The Bobcats won the match-up by a score of 4-3 in San Diego, Calif. with a walk-off home run. This will be the third meeting all-time against Alabama, fourth meeting against Cal, and second meeting against Samford.

The Bobcats came into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed after winning its last 10 straight conference games including sweeps over South Alabama, Appalachian State, and UT Arlington. In the conference tournament, the Bobcats went 3-2 overall with a come from behind victory over Troy in the opening game, another win over South Alabama, and a victory in the elimination game against Georgia State.

To start the year, Texas State went 9-2 in its first 11 games to match the best start in school history. The Bobcats opened up the year with two key victories over Oklahoma State in the CenturyLink Classic and added big wins over South Florida, Texas and South Alabama. The Bobcats were led in the circle by sophomore Randi Rupp, a First-Team All-Conference selection. Rupp finished the season with a 1.66 ERA with 316 strikeouts in 245.0 innings pitched. She has 29 victories this season which now is tied for second most in school history for wins by a pitcher.

As a team, the 'Cats ranked in the top 10 for most of the season in ERA and currently have a team ERA of 2.15. Offensively the 'Cats came on strong at the end of the season. Taylor Webb led Texas State with a .310 batting average in 142 at bats. Senior Kelli Baker led the team with 55 hits and Ariel Ortiz drove in 37 runs this season. The Bobcats have also been a top-20 defensive team this year with a fielding percentage of .972. More information will follow on http://www.txstatebobcats.com and on Facebook (txstatesoftball) and Twitter (@TxStateSoftball).

How did Texas State get the at-large instead of South?

RE: Congratulations to Cajuns and Bobcats Softball and good luck in the. Regionals - wcd35 - 05-16-2016 08:00 AM

Better RPI (I can't find the newest ranking but they were next to each other last ranking and TXST had a better weekend) and much better record vs RPI top 50

Congrats to the ladies of both schools. Make the SB proud!

RPI update came out this morning. TXST 41, USA 44.

Does suck that USA got left out. Until the show last night the SBC was projected to have 3 in. I was kind of surprised by it. Kept waiting for USA to be called/placed.

NCAA RPI

There still needs to be some serious head knocking with the folks who do the selections. They either need to decide if RPI is important or not. The Cajuns have one of the top RPI's each year and get moved down 4-5 spots in seeding to P5 teams. Yes, they do get to host, but playing at home is a huge factor in super regional play so getting a highest seed possible is critical. If not, why schedule one of the toughest OOC schedules every year.

We're the ones usually cheering on conference mates in the post season. I had to say to myself "wait...wut? it's us this time."

ULL - go rep us well, you usually do

TXST - leave everything on the field and get the SBC some more respect

RPI is not too far off as you point out in the newest one, but the record vs top 50 is miles apart:

TXST - 8-8
USA - 1-13

When you go to top 100 it gets closer, but that's a big difference.

The other obvious defining point in the resumes is head to head, with TXST going 4-0 vs South Alabama.

RE: Congratulations to Cajuns and Bobcats Softball and good luck in the. Regionals - wcd35 - 05-16-2016 11:59 AM

When you start comparing South Alabama vs the other bottom at-large teams that got in:

RPI
USA - 44
Northwestern - 45
Louisville - 46
Illinois - 47

vs Top 25
USA - 0-5
Northwestern - 3-12
Louisville - 1-3
Illinois - 1-5

vs Top 50 (including above top 25 rec)
USA - 1-13
Northwestern - 7-19
Louisville - 5-10
Illinois - 6-10

vs Top 100
USA - 15-14
Northwestern - 15-24
Louisville - 18-12
Illinois - 17-16

It doesn't really bother me getting left out because no matter where we went it probably would have been a quick exit. Too many young'uns on board this year. Looking forward to next year when we should be back in the mix.

4 of our starters are sophomores. The DP is a freshman. R Rupp is a sophomore. We are Junior laden this year; with only 3 Seniors. Bodes well for next year also; although replacing the 2 senior starters is a question mark.

Those young'uns would still gain post season experience and build off of it. I get trying to soften the blow, there is never a silver lining in missing out on the post season....ever. We have made the post season 26 consecutive years, that matters to recruits. Your coach would certainly like to sell that you have been 5 consecutive years instead of selling oh it's ok.. We probably wouldn't have done anything anyway so we just as soon stay home.

That recruiting visit wouldn't take long if the prospective recruit would ask the Coach, "what do you think about not making the post season", and the Coach would answer, "It didn't really bother me being left out because no matter where we were sent it would've probably been a quick exit".

Believe me, it bothers USA's Coach and it should, especially when you are on the bubble like they were. Like mentioned above, there's alot of experience gained by playing on the post season stage by having to play to a higher level than Conference in a hostile environment plus it gives the players a hunger to get back to a Regional next year and win it.

Local Austin station did an interview with Cat Osterman about the team/regional bid. Now, last night they had this under the header High School Sports but I mentioned it and they took that down. Not long but still some coverage in UT territory.
