Thanks for posting. Good read. Fleck draws in recruits for sure. I'm glad the city of Kalamazoo and WMU as a school are helping draw in the recruits too.

While Fleck is an outstanding recruiter, it does help that he has something to sell in WMU.

Along with Miami, Toledo, Ohio and Buffalo, WMU is among the top tier of MAC institutions academically (undergrad) and can easily compete with the bloated, indifferent, overrated and over-priced, Big Ten schools.

Absolutely. One of five research-class Universities in the state (UofM, MSU, MTU, and Wayne are the others). We do well on the academic front.

What a great article, thank you for posting. As far as WMU being a top to university, and giving Fleck something of substance to sell, all that was true before he got here.

It's nice that someone is finally marketing WMU though. Most of us have been asking for that for YEARS.

Question: How many of the 3 star recruits have P 5 offers according to 247?

How does that work in basketball?

Well, if we had a dynamic recruiter for basketball who knew how to leverage the academic quality of the institution, it would work great. It's an arrow in our quiver that others don't have. Whether the coach uses it is up to them.

Dear broncofan1,
I believe Eastern was recently elevated into that same category of universities by the powers that elevate.

RE: Fleck is a top head coach recruiter - ColinApocalypse - 03-29-2016 03:47 PM

Speaking of academics, WMU tweeted this out today: https://twitter.com/WMUAdmissions/status/714479294051926016

Funny that EMU is not even deemed worthy of inclusion in this side-by-side comparison.

RE: Fleck is a top head coach recruiter - Ken Barna - 03-30-2016 07:52 AM

Dear ColinApocalypse,
Like I said earlier, Eastern's inclusion happened about two months ago. When was this tweet made? Sometimes things take time to catch up. In any case we aren't worried about it.

Two days ago.

Also, which category are you talking about?

RE: Fleck is a top head coach recruiter - broncojohnny - 03-30-2016 09:22 AM

Here's a better look at the WMU comparison chart.....Eastern might qualify if their tuition is under $11,500......Maybe they can make their own chart....

RE: Fleck is a top head coach recruiter - Ken Barna - 03-30-2016 11:14 AM

Dear ColinApocalypse,
Eastern was just designated as a Carnegie Research University.

Dear broncojohnny,
Easterns tuition is under $11,500. In fact, it is just over $9,000.

Just like there are different divisions or levels of competitive sports among colleges and universities, there are different levels of research universities. R1 includes schools like the University of Michigan and MSU, R2 includes WMU and CMU, and R3 includes EMU. Levels are determined by the amount and degree of research activity going on at the universities.

Research is wonderful.

However, level of research university has no impact - ZERO - on the quality of undergraduate education an institution may offer.

That is why many admissions officers at top graduate schools will encourage students to attend smaller colleges (often liberal arts schools) for the undergraduate years as opposed to their own.

Michigan, in particular, is notorious for using its undergrad school as a cash-cow to fund its outstanding graduate programs. If you have the grades to get into Michigan undergrad, you are better off at a MAC honors college, or a top-flight liberal arts school like K-College or Hillsdale.

I'm listing Graduate College offerings from from both EmU and WMU..
We have about 35 PH.D. programs and they have 5 or 6...None in Technical fields(I think) They are most definitely not in the same research realm as Western..

http://www.emich.edu/graduate/prospective_students/degrees_programs/index.php

https://wmich.edu/academics/graduate

This should demonstrate a huge gulf between the two schools.. They have virtually no Engineering degree programs...Engineering Technology is a step or two lower..
That's all folks..Bye bye

That is flat-out, 100% FALSE when it comes to any STEM field. Especially engineering. It may be true for the liberal arts degrees, but it means a lot in other fields.
